Since I am sure most of you frequent both places I am just curious as to why you think the attitudes are so different between these two BB's. I go both places for tech stuff but if I am looking for new ideas or just to relax it is seldom the BB, IMO the BB is like talking to my great uncle tons of good info, but he usually repeats himself and it can at times be painful. Both have their advantages, just wondered what you thought. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

The BB is full of IH People. The reason you hear so much repetition is because users cycle in and out. Many stay. I enjoy both sites. Pirate4x4 is my dark, fun, agressive side. The BB is for my polite, community support, IH pride side.
The BB has been goin down hill lately though. Slow server, a lotta bitchin about pety shit, very little creativity. Seems to be mostly a stock only croud.
At the same time, I get very little tech info out of this site. A couple of you guys in this IH section of POR, are way more experienced than the bolt-on crouds in the other sections. --Josh

I burned out the dumb ass newbies on the BB. There is way to many "new" scout owners with poor wrenching skill and poor computer skills not doing there homework. <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0">
I have been only been on the net three years and when I found the BB I read and searched for over a month before I asked my first question. I think that the BB really went down hill when Bill stopped the Pic uploads. I'm still missing a few issues of his tech rag and the last few were just one long commercial for Caveman's 700r4 adapter! I guess his promise of subscription fulfillment is bogus.
I lurked on POR for a few months and things were much different than they are now. POR has be going softer and softer for the last year. But thing are much better than the BB!

Well, given the rate of new / hard technical questions on POR, no wonder there doesn't seem to be many on the BB!
POR *seems* to be more wheelin' oriented than "IH" oriented (even the POR-IH section).
"How can I get better gas mileage out of my Scout?" is not something I've seen posted here. :-)
Similarly, no one's asked about hdyro-steer mods to their steering box on BB.
I have seen 1/4-elip and link-susp questions on the Bulletin, but not a whole lot of responses, and usually from someone that lacks the $$$$/skills to pull it off.
There ARE wheelers on the Bulletin, and some folks that know their stuff - but they don't seem to need advice, or no one asks them the right questions to drag their info outta 'em.
And as OldScout said - you can only answer the same question so many times before your bored to tears with it.
The POR-attitude seems to cut down on those types. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
..If I had a $1 for every post I've read about wanting to put Chevy running gear under their Scout or something.. that I've already answered in the archives 30 times.. I could finally afford my winch. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Exactly. Pirate4x4.com is purely about wheeling. Primarily rockcrawling, but there are people with every type of wheeling experience around here. Also, if you guys don't frequent General 4x4, and occasionally check in on the other sections, you're missing alot of good 4x4 tech that can be applied to our IH vehicles.

Why would you waste your money on an IH mag for "How to prep for paint?" Any car restoration magazine will work. I stopped looking into the BB years ago. It took me a while to realize that when you swap out the drive train and running gear, most Scout sites are worthless for information. This site has helped educate me about all 4x4's so that I know which parts to apply to my Scout.

I went there once and got the impression it was all resto old timer fogeys! All hardcore IH tunnel vision freaks. I read back in the archives and never wanted to post. No offence to the owner's of the board but its too boring... My dad is in a corvette restoration and preservation society (read subculture extrordinaire) and its all on how to make it look like it came off trhe factory assembly line. While I respect the hours and hours they spend rebuilding and lubing their quartz crystal clocks on the dash WHO GIVES A FAWK! I think musclecars are made to go fast and trucks, jeeps, and (solid axled) 4x4's are made to wheel. With apporpriate wheeling comes scratches, dents, and loss of paint and some dash functionality. Same with going fast and vibrations from musclecars! To sum it up restoration isnt my thing I am not that anal and I dont care to read all about it. While I appreciate it like painting a portrait I wouldnt want to do it...

I'm feel the same as many of you. The BB is the place to go to find obscure info for IH's in the archives. The BB is where the newbies start out, and I agree that too many BB users never bother to search the Archives. But remember we all had to start somewhere. I am a mix of Rock Crawler, IH enthusiast, so I still frequent both sites. I have let to figure out if I fit in on POR, as I don't foresee a Pirate flag in my future. The blindfold thing freaks me out, mainly because my current spotter put me into a F**N rock on Sunday. <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0">

I spend time on both. I like to help with newbie questions on BB, but am getting good at posting links to questions already answered.
I like this board because it has attitude

And, like Tom said, this has more wheeling content, and less maintenance content.

It still has it's place though. I'm with you on the Scouts were meant to be off road, but I love old American iron. And i respect many of those old fogies that restore the IH rigs.

The BB is great if you think IH Buses and 2 ton trucks are COOOLL! Personally I dont. Dont get me wrong I love my scout,...but if I had found a Furd,Heep, or Suzuki in good shape for $750 I'm sure I would love it too; I just wanted something to build to wheel.
Oh, by the way they have a very insightful thread on "what CD player should I put in my Scout II" WTF?
I reply to questions over there but it's not entertaining like this board. And while were ripping Scout boards; ORC's sucks too.

Hey, I almost bought (and may still) a 2Ton Loadstar.. but it's 4x4 and a dually. :-) Crewcab, 8' flatbed, dually, 2ton 4x4 with 6.17 gears.
I wanted it to haul my Scouts around with - on it's back (stretch the flatbed). Too bad I bought my Travelette just before the Loadstar came up for sale again. *pout*

I read the BB now and then and it seems the IH people over there are where the Jeep guys were in 1982. A Chevrolet is an upgrade in a Scout, lockers (not lunch box) are good, a spool in the rear is streetable, 31" tires are a joke, and 3.73 gears are not low!

Hey, shadow man, which SSII is yours again? Only problem with this board is I cannot remember who is driving what cuz of all the goofy names.
Good thing is, folks can be as rude as they like, and not have to be concerned about being ostracized for letting their hair down. And no one takes anyone seriously in any case.
Its like going to two different churches. In one, you have to wear white shirt and a tie, in the other, you just come as you are. Nothing wrong with either. Just depends on your mood. Sometimes you want to go to church without having to get dressed up.
But then, I am just a lesser wheeler. What do I know!!!

You wanna see how bad JU is, follow this link to the HardCore Offroadin section at JU, which by the way only has two active links
JU HardCore (http://forums.jeepsunlimited.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000280.html) . Read the posts and count the number of times poser is used. <IMG SRC="smilies/clown.gif" border="0">

You can buy chrome valve covers - or finned aluminum ones if you want.
I've seen powder-coated thermostat housings, chrome alts, chrome air filter housings, diff covers..
But then, my rig won "Best Use of Plating" at RMIHR this year. <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0">
All 20 lug nuts, the air filter, the dented chrome gas cap, the tailgate button, and the chrome spoke steerin' wheel.
Back Country Binders sells aluminum diamond plate rocker covers..
Plenty of foo-foo dress-up stuff out there if you really want some, OldScout. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
Heck, Lund makes visors for Scouts, too!

BCB sells this really pretty shiny stainless steel tie rod, also. Got one on my rig. I get under there and polish that rod all the time.
That is the second pc of shiny stuff I have. The first pc was the nice shiny chrome fuel pump plate I put on when I rebuilt the engine. I get under there and polish that sucker all the time too. It is important that it is shiny so the fuel stays cooler. It also helps air flow off the radiator. Makes it move faster so the coolant gets cooled more efficiently. Helps prevent the infamous bow wave effect, and the damaging engine compartment pressure buildup.

Come on guys, the binder bulletin has served a purpose for many of us. And for those who were able to get it done without the BB good for you. I have spoken my mind over there before and will here too. As far as Bill T being a "god" I have never taken it that way. Lets face it, he has done a tremendous service to the IH community over the last few years. Look at whats going on here at Pirates, more good stuff getting done. And some one on some other board will be calling Lance or who ever started this board a god there. So what! They have all done good. I am here now to learn about the new next generation of hard core wheeling rigs. It just so happens scouts were way cheap when I got started. Who knows what the next 10 yrs will bring.

LOL! That reminds me of something we saw on our way through Eastern Washington..
Michelle asked "What is that??" in front of his - I couldn't quite tell.
It was a little truck body (seemed, anyhow) - S-Blazer-ish, or S-pickup, whatever.
It was sitting pretty high, like it was on stilts, but it had these little itty bitty tires on it..
Got closer. Sure 'nuff, it was a Monster Truck on little donuts on the trailer. I guess the good tires were in the Ryder truck towing the trailer.
Just an awfully funny sight to see that much coil-over shock with no tire near it.

I don't think anyone is really picking on the BB. Different forum, different people (some overlap) different rules, different attitude.
I think the two boards show the two faces of the IH world. On the one hand, we will bend over backward to be nice, considerate, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, oops, that is the boy scout oath, not the IH scout oath, but it still applies.
On the other hand, many folks have a bit more of an in your face attitude, where we like to razz and harrass one another. That is not appropriate for the BB, so it goes on here. Great. Seems like the best of both worlds.
If you have a question, post to both, or all three, or all four, or whatever. No one is bothered. There is not better or worse board. Just different forums, different styles.
However, the attitude on this board tends to keep the more elementary types of questions away. That is good, in that more complicated things can be talked about, like which board is better, but on the other hand, some folks might leave the IH scene all together if they do not understand the *rules* of this forum - i.e. take nothing and no one seriously.
I have gotten some good answers to questions on both boards. I usually post my questions to both boards, and I spend time on both boards.
So, I don't think this is a vs thread as in x against y, rather it is a compare contrast thread. No disrespect meant to either board, or anyone.
Lance and others have worked very hard on this board, Bill and others have worked very hard on the other. Both boards work well. Both boards get the job done. Both board provide a huge service.
Some folks will like one board better than another. Great. Diversity is good. Be pretty boring if everyone was as boring as me.

Yep, but it's BEHIND the garage. '68 1/2T 2wd (4 coils!). Only a 250-6 with 3- on the tree but it also has the electronic overdrive.
My mom's pickup. Used mostly for dump runnin' (you think I'd use my IH Pickup for that?? LOL) but lately daily-driver after my sister borrowed her car and smoked the head n' gasket ("Y'know, there's a temp gauge over there that you're supposed to look at from time to time.. and that's BEFORE the car just up n' quits..") since my mom's '74 Scout II needs a kit in the 727.

I don't know why certain people feel that they have to push their lifestyle everywhere they go. <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> What next, a lavender ribbon for the Scout?
You don't have to have been in the Navy to know that it just makes sense to carry two soap bars into the showers. <IMG SRC="smilies/eyemouth.gif" border="0"> Guess I'll have to carry them each time I log on.

Well, uh, no, I won't 'wheel the T'all through the 'Con. I am temporarily Scoutless. I recently acquired the THE BEAST, and had to sell off my Scout as I own too many other cars to keep up on the insurance, etc. I am beginning to build a trail rig (have everything but a tub), which will be, of course, a Scout.

C'mon, Mark. How better to show up the J**pers than to pilot a full-size IH through the 'Con?
Maybe that's how I should finish off my Travelall? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

OP, funny you should mention the need for a tub. I have been seriously considering ending my 74 project build up, and just parting it out. I have a tub that is almost complete. I replaced pass side floor, parts of the bed, added some angle into the bed to strength the whole thing. The drivers side is cut out, ready for some additional work, then install the new floor. Let me know if your interested, read cheap, I basically have around $140.00 in new sheet metal parts into the tub, and would also consider trades.

Thanks for the offer, but I have a handle on an acceptable (good enough for a trail rig) tube for around $200! The trail rig will never be a show'n'shine candidate, just a mechanically stout vehicle.
As for your comment, Tom, I had thought of 'wheeling the T'all through the 'con, but I don't have the stomach to watch grown men who own J**ps, burst into tears and soil themselves in shame. Just can't bear it.
