I have heard two different stories on this. Is the 2wd and 4wd 700R4 the same except the tail shaft?

For the most part, yup. Some models have an extra clutch plate, some have a different servo, Corvette 700R4's have a cool valve body that allows full throttle up-shifts to OD, not a big deal in a truck, but cool anyway. Pretty much any of them can work in a 4wd if the tailshaft is the correct length.

thanks for the reply. Basically my friend blew his tranny and a shop wants $1900 to rebuild it and install it. My friend has no money so I think i will try and get a rebuilt one of the same year and switch tail shafts - etc. and get him on the road again for around $700
