Randys wants $240. Is their another less expensive source for this tool, or is $240 in the ballpark???

thanks Tony

Who uses a case spreader??

Every time I've brought up the subject all of my gear-settin'-up buddies laugh at me and show me two pry bars and a plastic mallet.

I've also heard this trick; stuff a rag between the ring gear and the pinion, then turn the pinon and it will push the carrier out.

just build your own case speader. all you need is some 1/4" flat stock and some 2" square tubing, a piece of all-thread and some bolts to put it together with. just use a picture of one as a gudie. made mine in about 2 evenings working for about 2 or so hours each night. you may bend the all-thread, but that is easily replaced.

You don't need a case spreader, you can acuttly do more damage using one, you can spread the housing to much, i bought one from Mac used and never used it, use a big pry bar its out, just make sure someones there to catch the carrier. If you have to have one try Mac or Snap On to see if they have used ones, thats how i got mine $100.00 is what i paid for it.

I got 2
1 to get it out (pry bar)
1 to get it in (4lb hammer and a wooden block.)

Thanks for all of the feedback. I will be looking for the $100 tool! Most of my junk is so worn out the carriers fall out when I pull the caps. What I have had difficulty with is getting a full .015 worth of preload on the carrier bearings with the hammer and block method. I usually have to go lite on carrier preload, .008-.010 to get the carrier in. I am about to rebuild the dana 70 in my motorhome, I want to get all of the preload I can because I tow with it. That is why I wanted to try the spreader this time.

Did you say you were working on a Dana 70??

You might want to check the holes on the housing. Make sure they are the same size as dana 44 / 60. I'ved used my spreader on those, just not on a 70.
