Well I have a few problems with that rig.
1. the rear 44 will not last. I mean come awn a hot motor and big tires with a rear 44

2. the thing must be a real PITA to enter and exit. The big X in the door is not my idea of cool.
3. I your going to do an engine swap why a SBC? I would of liked to see a 440 in there.

4. It's too freaking high. Two inches lower and get out the sawsall and make room.

Why no brake lights??

WOW!!!
I guess it's a good thing it's not being built for you. Maybe i can clear up some confusion. First of all the rear 44 will be just fine. Everyone always runs 60s because they break 44s but ask yourself why do they break 44s? But just in case i have a full set of spares. Second, i'm 6'3 275lbs and i get in and out real easy. Third, a SBC because i grew up building them and to me they are easy to fix, easy to find parts and have plenty of power. It is not that high at all. The pics you are seeing were taken before the engine, trans, and t-case were installed. Will also have a couple hundred lbs in fuel in the rear. Couple times out and the springs will sag a little. No brake lights because i will use strickly as a trailer rig. It will have lights in the rear but just running lights and a reverse light.
I wouldn't try to change your mind and i respect your opinion. Just thought i could clear up any confusion there may have been. Thanks for all of your opinions and hope to see ya'll on the trail.

Hmmm.. because they don't hold up to abuse with big tires well? There's a thread about "who broke a rear 44" in General Disc. right now.

That said, I'm still runnning D44s front/rear in every rig except the 1Ton.

Well, "Little Devil" has HALF of a '44 in the front at the moment..

Didn't you say you'll be competing in ARCA-like events with it?

I still think brake lights would be a good idea. We've been taking to mounting a "third" brake light to the top/rear of the 'cage on some of our rigs. Usually an Amber light so you can see it through a lot of dust.

I have a high/low "turn signal" lamp I'm going to install for that purpose - both a running light, and a brake light. a LOT easier to see.

I know if I were behind someone on the trail I'd sure like to know if they've stopped. But if it's strictly a competition rig where you're only running alone, I guess it's not that big of a deal.

Tomorrow my GF starts Herculining her Scout 800 (with my assistance). Currently zero rust, and we'd like to keep it that way.

Meanwhile I'll be putting in more outlets..

I have enough receptacles mounted in the ceiling (switched) for lights that if I plugged two-tube 40w fixtures into every outlet I'd be suckin' down about 20amps. GOT LIGHT?

Still need to put in all the outlets for the "shop equipment" and the big 220 for the welder.

I'm running 16/35/15 boggers so they are not THAT big. One of the reasons i chose to do a scout was because it had d44s. Lots of scout guys always rant and rave about the scout being a great 4x partly because it came factory with d44s. Common swap for jeeps. Oh well. If it get to the point where i break lots of them then i will upgrade, but for now i'll use what iv'e got.
I don't really care for competeing. Mine is strictly for fun. I have two boys and a 4 month old daughter and that's another reason i chose a scout. It will be some time before my daughter goes wheelin but at least she will have room (providing my oldest rideshis quad). The X doors are real simple to get in and out of.
I of coarse didn't expect everyone to like my scout but i do and that's all i really care about. Thanks for all the input.

With "only" 35s it might hold up pretty well. What gear ratio?

I've been told the "break-over" on whether a SII is going to grenade a rear '44 is from 33s to 35s.. *shrug* I'm hoping to run 36s for a while on the stock running gear before I build something else for it.

I like the Scout but I agree on the axles. I was going to put Scout 2 width 44s into Rock Scout but my Street Scout now has 44s front and rear sprung over on 33s and it's too narrow. It looks sweet for pimpin around town but for rockcrawling I'm putting 3/4 ton Cheby axles under the rock Scout. Yours might not look so tippy when the suspensions settled but IMHO I wouldn't dump too much money in the Scout 44s as full widths will probably be in your future. But it's a sweet ride and should provide lots of family fun.

I'm running 4.56 gears
detroit rear
arb front

If i do upgrade i will sell both and go to a ff14 rear and d60 front. You gotta remember that my scout will weigh considerably less than most others with all the stuff that's been removed. The drivetrain alone weighs a couple hondo less. To give you an idea of how light it is, i can lift and move the back end side to side by myself. Mine is a mild built 350 w/ about 320-350 hp and ??? on the torque. Like i said before it's mostly for fun and it too will HAUL ASS!!!

Yeah, but you added all that tube.. and most of us don't haul THAT BIG of a chest!

One of my Scouts is down to 3700lbs. Too heavy. It's going on more of a diet. That's 3700lbs with NO interior and NO glass and I've already lost a bunch of sheetmetal.

I want to see 3500lbs or less.

3500lbs + 185lbs of me would put me right at the "top" of my bracket.. to get to the top end of the next bracket I'd need to get the rig down to about 3000lbs.. I'm just not sure where to find 700lbs I don't need.

But I know there's 450+cid to be had from an SV.. but after paying for the 304C, I don't think I want to pay for that kind of cubes!

Tube frame baby. Alum floor, fiber quarters. That will loose 1/2 ton. Another 350 if you go Chebby. Then the 44's would hold with a truss, and 44's are a hell of a lot lighter than two 60's.

Thought about it.. along with links n' coil-overs, too.. but part of the fun is that it's *STILL* a Scout II. I like being able to say, "You, too, could build a rig just like this from your left over parts."

I'm not sure if the 'glass is lighter than the steel. I need to decide soon though. I have one pair of brand new 'glass quarters, and one pair of new steel quarters.

One set for the trail rig, one for the racer.

I was thinking of putting the steel on the racer - it's less likely to get dimples from encounters with trees n' such. The 'glass on the trail rig would just flex without denting (ok, or crack/break). They'll either be perfect, or SMASHED.

*IF* I actually get ambitious enough to move the motor this winter I'm going to start hole-sawing the inner quarters and removing extra brackets and flanges.

There's also weight to be saved by building a new cage from real tubing and scrapping the Sch40 crap I have now.

I technically could lose the whole bed and inner quarters and just hang the bedsides on it, but it's a taste thing - I like having the bed and calling it mostly Scout.

Dunno if I'll use steel or aluminum for the extra trans tunnel I'll need to build.. I haven't tried welding aluminum yet..

Could drop some weight for sure if I went SB350 w/ AL heads, a TH350/TH400 and a NP208.. but $$$$$$ into the 304, and I'm the only guy racing IHs with a 'Binder motor.

The trussed '44s are going to hold up.. but I've proven untrussed '44s won't. Still, it took almost 3 years to kill the first one..

The other has a Falcon 200-6 in it, and was a 4cyl originally (I think) - it might have axles under it still, no trans.

I also know where there's an SR2 that's nearly running/driving - 304V8 n' all - that can be had for the "price" of a late 800 driver's door (pushbutton style) and the striker portion of the tub.

Guy has his dad's original Sport-top but way-back-when a skilled (but misguided) body man replaced the driver's door and tub's latch portion with an 80 "twist" door.

I have some SII tubs, too.. none are "rust-free" tho'..

Oh yeah.. next race will probably be early February and about 60 miles north of Helena.

After that.. might be one in Powell, WY in May.. then Billings, MT in June.. and Lolo/Missoula, MT around 4th of July usually.

Hey JD & Ben

I'll have to hook up with you guys some time. Just went to my sister's in Grandview for the first time. Didn't realize how close it was to your neck of the woods.

Don't know if my scout will make it over the pass...still only have third gear :-)...
