Hey, i got a rear dana 70...and i thought all f350 70's were 35 spline, well i was wrong...i got too early of a rear 70. It is a 23 spline 1.5 inch diameter shaft...Is this weak?? 2 more years later and i would have a 35 spline shaft...BUT of all my luck i get this, all i wanted was a TRUE 1 ton. Is this rear axle gonna be breakin' alot on 38's?? and a TBI 350?? Should i go back and look for a later model 70? Or can i run this and be fine...it does measure to 1.5 inches in diameter. I posted this in other sections, but no place is as lively as IH...Y'CMON!

Just pull a new set of 35 spline shafts. You going to put a locker in it right?

Compared to the cross section of a 44, or 35 for that matter the spline count if that 70 really is irrelevant. A 1.5" axle shaft is gonna be pretty damn stout.

But, I guess anything can break.

OS, you know im a cheap bastid...i got that thing for $81 bones, im taking a buzzbox to that thing:flipoff2:

But it ain't worth my time if its junk...i thought it didn't really matter as far as spline count, i thought the diameter is where the beef is...also this thing gets bigger towards the splines...like neck up, if thats what ya call it.

Iscout62...the housing is sooo beefy, i could prolly run 19 spline shafts and be fine...but id rather trust some beef, and i just want to know if this 70 is beef, even though it's 23 spline...the thing is it cost me $81 bucks, which is nothin', but it's the time i have to put into this just to put it in: Grind the perches, re weld, weld the spiders...im not even puttin' disks on it now...i will prolly eventually get rid of this. And if it's really junk, then it isn't worth the time for something thats gonna bust on me

Basically im looking for: Yes it's junk OR No it's not junk.

And im just trying to find the reasoning for these two answers...what ive got is:

1.5 inch dia. shafts...BEEF!
23 spline....YUKK

is the diameter of the shaft where the beef is OR the spline count...maybe this is elementary and im slooooow:p

The tube is worth the $81 bucks. The only thing that sucks about the 70 is the clearance is worse than a 60, just like running a 14bolt. Hell, if you manage to snap a shaft, then put a locker in it and change to 35 spline axles.

Wheel the bastard!

if ya buzboxing it then run it

don't use force with me!!:flipoff2: Im gonna wheel that mofo till she explodes...but in the meantime...YES/NO is it junk?

Dana 25/27 junk.
Dana 70 (unless it's broke) not junk!

Regardless of your spline count at 1.5 inches on the shaft you've got plenty off beef. I guy in my club runs a D70 from an old. like really old, Ford Unibody behind a healthy 400 with plenty of throttle and hasn't broke anything yet.

My vote:
RUN 'ER 'TIL SHE BLOWS!

you said it necks down, or gets thinner after the splines.. a shaft is only as strong as its weekest part.. so basicly.. the thinist part is what you worry about.. so if it necks down from 1.5 to 1.25.. then it will more than likely break at the part thats 1.25" dia.

spline count afects the amount of surface area towo parts have in contact... so, if you were to keep the size of the spines the same a 35 spline would have to be a larger dia than a 30 spline. you can however have a corse spline instead of a fine spline: ie: 30 spline vs 19 spline or 35 spline vs 23 spline..

does that put it in terms that make more sence to you?

makes sence...the shaft doesnt neck down, all the shafts that i have seen neck down at the splines, this shaft gets bigger at the splines. If anything is **looks** like its 1.5in dia from the flange where it bolts to the hub, and then right before the splines 1.5+inches in diameter.

I bet its 1.31 at the flange and 1.5 at ths splines! The splines need to be 1.5" to fit into the carrier. You need to get one of these! (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=5647)

"It's" that small??:flipoff2: :flipoff2: I had a feeling you were "lacking" but damn...using a dial indicator.:flipoff2:

:p

You are prolly right...i think i was just *hoping* it was like that, especially after i counted 23 splines, i knew i shouldn't have inhaled that gasoline earlier that day:p If i don't find shafts in the next week from the boneyard she's going in.

Thanks for all the help, a LOT more reassuring that i will eventually get to a TRU 1 Ton. Thanks:cool:

BTW there are 3 (That I know of) types of 70's: std 70, 70U, & a 70HD.

They have limited gear selections and lockers depending on which model you have. Get the BOM number and call someone (Randy's R&P, WCD, Drivetrain Direct) to find out exactly what you have...Junkyard 70's suck cause it can be a crap shoot to see what you got.

A dail indicator won't tell you jack about a shafts thickness. Out of round/bent yes.

I said you needed a pair of calipers! A simple common very useful tool. Oh yea there cheap! I guess you will need to brush up on the part were as 1/4" is expressed .250! :flipoff

I bet a dial indicator would work for you:flipoff2:
I could just take my shafts up to our mini baja shop, and use the one of many dial calipers up there.

I have a 76 ford d70 35 splined and the shaft does not narrow, its 1.5in along the whole shaft.

This pic shows the d70 23 spline next to a d60 30 spline, the d70 is still beefier, and the pic shows how it slightly tapers in after the splines.

dont worrie about it, its strong!

and they guys saying its as bad as the 14bolt's clearance wise, comon, a d70 is so easy to grind the lip off of, I grinded a goor 3/4-1in off mine, cut 1/2way into the diff cover and it works great. a HF grinder and afew hours and your done, alot easier then a 14bolt!.

good luck.

Boy i guess that makes the Unimog axles 6 spline shitty, even though its like 1 and 9/16 or 1 and 5/8 thick.:flipoff2:

Run it till it breaks then worry about if.
