Is the gate locked during winter? If so has any tow rig safe areas been setup at eagle lakes side?

no at Cisco i think the gate is closed for season not 100% sure and eagle lakes has staging area but is off the road about 100 yrds or so depending on snow depth that might be your only issue with trailer. don't park on eagle lakes rd. i think you can get ticketed or towed

The gate is closed at Cisco, but its still open for snow mobiles, so I'd guess the parking lot at the campground is available for tow rig parking as usual. Give the campground a call.

I will I wonder if they still let you use their private trail to ELR for a fee during the winter that would be awesome

the bypass trail has been closed for about a month. I parked at the lot with the bathroom last saturday, with trailer. Had some trouble turning around with that amount of snow. Got to the big mud hole before second water crossing and decided not to risk it. snow was in great shape then with no tracks in front of me.

The campground should be open for tow rig parking. Rattlesnake is closed to 4x4's for snowmobile use. The FS closes it when the is 12" of snow on the ground and CG grooms the road for snowmobiling.

I didn't know they close their connector trail but then again I never asked. I couldn't imagine doing that trail covered with snow. There are some pretty steep parts to it.

Do not park on Eagle Lakes Road. It is illegal snow or not and the guys at Shinnyboo are on top of policing that behavior. The road is not a snow park. If you can get to Indian Springs it is ok to use that area. There are no winter closures (Yet!)

Was just up at Eagle lakes. again don't park on the paved road. You can get in to the OHV staging area and park/play all you want. I would not suggest leaving vehicles over night there as a ton of breakins happen all the time. Probably even during the day. Just be careful and dont leave your vehicle unattended for a long time.

WOW, you made it to the mud hole? I have never done Fordyce in the snow but that must have been fun. Maybe my imagination is getting the better of me. I will be up there this weekend to find out for myself (fully prepared for anything of course).

Got any pics?

This time of year you can still get in the trail, I went to WH1 this time last year. We haven't had any big storms yet.

****If you make it to the committee crossing Rattlesnake Road is closed for the winter so you will need to go out threw Meadow lake or turn around and go back out Eagle lakes.****

If you park your tow rig in the Cisco campground they do charge more in the winter. Last year it was $15 per day because they have to plow the snow. It is still way cheaper than having your rig broke into!

Right on, thanks for the info. A good friend of mine (also a wheeler) just bought a place not too far from Eagle Lakes Rd so we are headed up this weekend to play around for the day. I do understand that Rattlesnake Rd is closed and I will stay off of it.

I am a bit jealous cause I was wanting to head up fordyce but my buddies had no chance at getting in. Headed in peirce and found nobody had been in there and there was some really deep snow. We buried a runner and spent a few hours getting him out.

Also I didn't have any problems getting my truck and trailer into the staging area. A lot of people come into eagles lake to play in the snow so don't leave anything in sight.

..and just to throw it out there, Tread Lightly! especially in the condtions that exist right now. Access is not limited (yet) but during the first storms and later in the spring the trail is especilly sensitive. If you can't make a section please don't just keep gettin' it. Get a tug or haul some cable (or rope is you've joined the 21st century :D.)

Damage to the trail now is just something else we have to attend to later instead of spending our time on more worthy projects.

Thanks!

Not to hijack your thread, but does anyone have any info to when the Cisco entrance might open for summer access? From what I understand it depends on the snow level??? Trying to get some confirmation on that, and estimations on a date.

It does depend on the snow level. If you call the Cisco campground (530 426-1600) they might be able to tell you if they have an estimated date. I passed by Sunday and it was snowing pretty good.

I just called campground and the gate is closed as of today. She said snow is melting fast but still closed. FWIW they are open for memorial day and have some space available still.

The tow rig parking lot at Cisco Campground is open for parking and the gate may be opening in a week or so on Rattlesnake. There is still a lot of snow and you would only be able to get about a mile up the road according to the campground.
