Ok I feel like a bit of a fool for having to ask this, but I'm getting ready to yank an engine and transmission out of a donor truck ('85 F250) tomorrow and I'd much rather pull it as a whole unit. I can't for the life of me figure out how to take the shifter off the transmission! Does it pop apart where the shifter sits in the cover plate? or does it separate farther up where there looks to be a plastic pin?
halp! :homer:

Right at the bottom of the shifter is a little dome cover that is threaded on. Unthread this and the shifter should pull right out.

if it's too much of a pain in the ass just unbolt the whole top cover it will make it a lot easier to take out or install since it will be about 3 or 4 inches shorter.

Ah ha! I had no idea that cap thingy was threaded on, it spun off relatively easilly and the shifter popped right out! I had thought of taking the top cover off the tranny, but was worried about dropping crap into the tranny when I pulled it out.
Thanks alot guys!
