I'm looking to build or buy a beefier tie rod to use on my 76 Scout II axle. I'd like to fond out if there are beefier tie rod ends that I can get that have the same taper as the factory Scout ones. Does anyone know what the taper is and if there are other TRE's that match this taper? I'm kinda hoping that it will match either Chevy 1 tons or Wagoneer's (both of which I can get kinda cheap froma buddy).

Thanks in advance!

There are stronger TREs, but I don't think they match the 1T Chevy or Waggy (or at least, the common ones)

I bought my bolt-in HD tie-rod w/ replaceable TREs from
Gryphin Racing (http://www.gryphinracing.com)

I know the custom one I had to order for my "high-steer" had a different end for the Waggy tapered steering arm from TriCounty.

Not sure about the taper question, but the guy that owned my Scout before me put a Chevy front axle on there and did some work - here's what it is:

"HD CrMo steering parts (Tie rod by Chenowth Racing, custom "S" drag link w/1 ton ends)"

Hard to see, but it's down there!

My tie rod and draglink are both made from 1.25" solid stress proof steel. I used 3/4-16 Tie rod ends, part number ES150R and ES150L, they fit the stock taper. The TRE's retail for $20-25 each, and you can buy the 1.25" stress proof for less than $2 a foot. Then you would cut it to length and any machine shop should be able to tap the 3/4-16 R and L threads for you.

The chevy 1-ton and Wagoneer TRE's have a larger taper, you would need to retaper the knuckles to use those TRE's.

I have a beefier tie rod. Pretty little stainless steel jobber <g> Got mine from John Fleck at Back Country Binders.

http://www.backcountrybinders.com

Here is his web page blurb on these:

1" Solid Stainless Steel Tie Rods and Draglinks:

Unequalled strength. These two products when added to your vehicle insure you stand the best chance of returning unbroken in the back country and on the toughest trail in America.

They are superior and outperform the stock flimsy equipment that is made of 1/8 wall mild steel and 5/8 solid mild steel. The factory ones are hollow, these are solid polished stainless steel. In addition the ends are the heaviest on the market. An additional option available is adding heim joints to the end in place of the conventional ends. What this means is more flex on the draglink when articulating (spacers must be used...ask). On the tie rod it means that you can move the tie rod above the knuckles for 2-3" more ground clearance in a spot previously taken up in front of the axle (requires drilling out taper to 3/4"hole). This mounting method maximizes chances of not bending tie rods on the trails.

thats a good deal. 1.375x.250 would be beefy, even the 1.25x.188 would far surpass the stock junk.
