: Using a tuck oil pump with scout rear sump.

Alright, since we can't get oil pumps for our scouts anymore, I am certain there is a better alternative to using a truck pump with a front sump pan. Probably the smartest thing is to rebuild your pump.
I bought a new pump from autozone that is supposed to be for a Scout. They special ordered it, it is a Melling M71. Of course it's not the right pump, it is for the front sumps. I went to return it and the idiot behind the counter told me I couldn't because it was a special order. Instead of fighting it I figured I'd see if I could make it work first.

One thing I noticed is that the inlet is a larger diameter than my scout pump. The new pump measure ~15/16" ID on the inlet and the scout pump I think was about 3/4". So I bolted it up to see how far off it is, Not too bad. Should be very easy to adapt. I turned down a tube real quick to fit the inlet.

The picture looks like the inlet and the pickup are at different heights, but they aren't.

Clear this up for me

We can use these pumps right?
With the larger diameter inlet, do they pump more volume or preauser than the Scout pumps?
Do you see any reason not to do this?

Yes I know. I'd just rather use a new pump. I tore mine apart and it's obvious someone has been in there before. There were no gaskets between the plate and the plate has some wear on it from the gears. It's rebuildable, but I'd rather use a new one.

Thanks for the links, I did not find those when searching. Have any idea why he plugged the bypass and put in a nipple 90* to it?

It's been a while since I played with the pan and pump. But depending on your setup, why not do a little cut and paste on the pan. You just need to make room for the pump and still have the pick up in the rear.

You could go to the junk yard and find a loadstar and get a 10qt oil pan:shaking:

I have a pan that needs to be cleaned up and painted you can have free. shipping might kill the deal as it would be like $20-25

that's only if you use a truck pan. I think he is looking to use a truck pump with a scout pan.

I am using a truck pump with my scout pan. I have already modified my original pickup to work with the pump. Now i've got to modifiy the pan.

R290, thanks for the offer. If it comes down to needing it, I may get that from you. What with the "punch out plug" pics? I'm confused....

On a Pickup truck the oil dip stick is in front of the motor. The Scout pan has the dip stick on the side of the oil pan. Your good!

But if you went to a truck pan you need the truck dip stick and truck oil pickup tube to complete the conversion from a Scout pan. The truck pan does not have a dip stick tube in the side of it like a Scout pan does.
