: track/kick doubler or dual yotas?
bondsman 01-11-2010, 04:11 PM Hey guys. I'm having trouble making a decision and need help. I have a track/kick doubler ready to put in my sami but i'm worried about the strength of the sami case with the extra tq going in to it. I'm running yota's with 5.29 r/p's, 30 spline inner and outer longs in the front, 1.3 liter with a gti swift crank bored out to a 1.6 with flat top pistons and a sumoII head, 6.5gears in the sami transfer case, mighty kong bucket(not spined but will be soon) with solid mounts, 36" iroks on 15" trail ready beadlocks. I have broke 2 cases already one of which was my fault for not checking to make sure all my bolts were tight. Thinking about going to 37" comp compound tires. I guess my question is do you guys think it will strong enough or do you think i should just spend the money to go with dual yotas or even an atlas. I don't mind to spend the extra money, but not if I don't have to. I'm not a throtle junky but i do wheel at clayton ok. alot so it does get used.
Thanks for any help in advance.
tanzuki 01-11-2010, 05:00 PM I'm running a kicker 3, 6.5 calmini gears with a 16v and 39" stickies for 2 1/2 yrs now with no problems. I've actually been very pleased with it. I'm gunna do a D300 at some point cause I want front dig. Other than that I'd just keep the kicker 3, the gear selection is awsome.

Do the D300 with twin sticks. I wish I did.
bondsman 01-11-2010, 06:39 PM Thanks for the input Tanzuki. I want to run 39's but i worrie about the ring and pinion. You haven't had any problems with them?

After upgrading to 30 spline longs I found out the next weak link was the R&P.
I run 529's and had Bobby long cryo treat them with very good results.

I'm running 529s with a 4cyl rear and a HP front. Since running 39s I've broke a front HP carrier and chipped the front ring gear. I also broke a inner star of my 30 spline long.
Not too bad for 2 1/2 yrs IMO. But still want to do a stronger frontend.

same here ... in fact the 4cyl bragging rights is fun up untill your tires get over 36's then you just wish you had bigger motor and an auto so you could go out and just have fun ... Ithink thats where i am headed .. of course i'll find a smaller rig to shove my kicker 3 and 1.6 in cause on 33's that much gear is a blast!

Sounds like where I am at. I wanna take my entire drive train and stick it under a 4 door tracker with 33-35's for easy trails and expo and build a buggy with more powa.
To the OP. Kicker3's solve a lot of the factory case break problems when you marry the stock case to the rest of the drive train. This makes it much harder for the case to torque far enough to break. Married works much better. I haven't broke a case since I installed the kicker3.

This is my conclusion as well but since I haven't ran one yet, I cant say. Im running 37's w/6.4's and 5.29 v6 3rds. I would like to run 40's next along with the shogun but I am still on the fence weather to do a Yota doubler.

lankster29 01-12-2010, 06:07 PM I'm running a toyota doubler. I've only had it for a season but I love it. You'll get less gearing since you can do the 6.5's in the sami case but I have to say I like the assurance that those cases are practically bullet proof with our weight and hp. I broke a couple sami cases and swapped in a toyota tranny and dual cases and now I never worry. Just my 2 cents.
phil_j 01-12-2010, 07:02 PM Is giving up the high range reduction with the zuk case an issue for you? The centered output may be good or bad depending on axle choice. The toy rear output is also significantly higher, which can hurt d-shaft angles depending on height and wb.
Aside from that, I went to dual toy cases, 23 spline 4.7s, rotated adapter to pick up a little clearance. It's funny, the relatively small toy gear is huge compared to the zuk stuff. I'd run an adapter to a toy tranny rather than an adapter from a suzuki tranny/reduction box to a toy case, myself, to pick up the strength there as well and the bigger clutch. As a bonus, in my opinion it's a nicer shifting tranny.

True, but the kick reduction box is only 1.8 vs the 2.28 in the toy, so you get a little back there. 11.7:1 for the kick/sam setup, 10.7 for the toys, and the first gear in the toy tranny is also slightly lower. Or the difference between 225:1 total with toys and 245:1 with the zuk gear. Dual 4.7s are always an option if 225 just isn't quite slow enough and you really need the 470:1 :grinpimp:
bondsman 01-12-2010, 08:27 PM Thanks for all your help guys. I think I've decided to go with the track/kick doubler since most of you guys that have it have had good luck with it, and since I already have it. I don't (think) DL angle would be a major issue with the yota stuff in my rig cause I'm at 101" wheel base. If it doesn't work out I'll just swap to a toy tranny and an atlas. For all the goodies I would want in the toy cases and a disco the difference is only $500. Only part that sux is that I work about 75 hours a week so I have to pay someone to work on my junk. Has anyone ever had an input shaft cryoed? I talked to bobby long today and he said he didn't really think it would help any but he wasn't sure cause he didn't know what type of material they were made out of.
lankster29 01-12-2010, 08:28 PM I extended my wheelbase 10" so the driveline angles aren't a problem for me. But ya I did notice the in high range but its not too bad. I would still really suggest going toyota because of the strength factor.
