: timing gear question

i have a '76 345 V8 that i am having problems with
when the #8 cyl is at TDC, where are the timing marks on the gears supposed to be?

two conditions exist... 1)mark on crank gear at top and mark on on camshaft gear at bottom. This is #8 TDC on the compression stroke. 2) mark on crank gear at top and mark on camshaft gear also at top. This is #8 TDC at end of exhaust stroke/beginning of intake stroke.
