this is a spool from a 850 hp desert racing trophy truck.

it is made from 4130 cro-mo and runs 1.9" 46 spline axles.

i stuck a 35 spline axle in there just for size comparision.

so much for the myth of "stick a spool in there and never worry about it " :flipoff2:

Thats what they get for using an even number of Spline count :flipoff2:

ever one know that odd numbers are stronger.

31, 35, 47 splines

Let me guess how this happened

about 120mph+ in the desert with 37, 38 inch tires constantly loading and unloading the axle jumping shit and dodging desert tortoises.
then he got a little side air action came down hard and on the gas and :nuke:

Or was he just testing his shit out at the mall Some times that will do it:flipoff2:

it is one thing to type those words but until you are in the truck actually doing it......... it is hard to believe that any part actually survives. including the driver. the way that spool looks is how my back feels afterwards.

nice carnage....

..watched Scott Douglas (http://www.douglasmotorsports.com)shatter the centers out of three 17" magnesium beadlock rims a few weeks back....takes a bit of sideloading to do that too! Course his, 780+ hp motor helps too...

Outta stop by his shop and get some pics of them someday....

Actually, I believe the spool is made from 4340 but that is beside the point. Didn't that spool fail due to the usage of wrong length (too short, not enought spline engaugement) axle shafts???????

I've never been in the race truck for anything more then a few fun runs in a play area. I can imagine how Hours of high speed go fast battering could feel. I've been hit by a few cars and trucks in my lifetime :D

The bigger question that begs to be answered is why is there a Moser Engineering sticker in Sandy's shop? Could it be that the top secret Sandy Cone skunkworks is actually in Chi-town? Given camo's supposed geographic closeness to Sandy's shop, could camo in fact be living in the midwest, in the city by the lake, right down the street from you and I?!

Inquiring minds want to know!

cm "or it could just be a dumb sticker" k

Nevermind. I was thinking of Strange Engineering.

I guess Moser being in Indiana is close enough though. After all, Indiana is Chicago's armpit.

Wow--nice job. I was kind of hoping my buddies rear end problems were a thing of the past when he upgraded to the big beer can sized axles. I guess we will need to rethink carrying the spare axle housings again. Really glad we are full floater now--sure was a bitch to replace axle bearings after every race...if it was not for the disc brakes wheels would have fallen off every other race or so!

nope sandy is in tempelton ca. good eye on the sticker. if you look close you will also notice a CTM sticker. not every body can afford to build an axle using sandy's custom shafts so he is a dealer for moser, strange, williams, currie and others. basicaly he will build your axle using what ever parts you desire. this comes in handy for me because it means he is very familiar with all the diffrent companys offerings and i get to see all the diffrent parts. sorry it was no big scandal :D

Nice carnage, most of his broken race parts are because someone f'ed up installing or setting it up, rarely do his parts fail from to much gettin it. No wander Sandy takes forever, you are always up there taking pictures:). Ever notice how every picture Camo takes at Sandy's shop is on the scale. If you have ever been there, there is stuff everywhere, and it's the only spot you can put anything.

LOL good thing he has to use it every day to ship stuff or there would not be any place to take a pic. :D he jokes about it being my studio.

Seen it.

I was with some buddies, hanging out and one guy says "I'm having a problem with this part, listen to this..." and jumps in his truck. He proceeds to break BOTH birfield joints right there in the parking lot. Did some more carnage too, but not sure what.

Could it be a defective part???

I've seen the same spool survive some pretty nasty schmidt over and over again without breaking...
http://jeepthing.com/flipout.gif

Looks to me like defective spool or axle housing flexed a bit too much...

I would put money on axle housing flex......http://jeepthing.com/rolleyes.gif

it is now. :D part was not defective. it had survived 4 seasons of racing. it just wore out.

nope no housing flex. it is a fully trussed cro-mo housing and it checks out straight . you can put the money in the mail. :flipoff2:

After spending time around a off road race shop I have come to the thinking that they really can break anything in a race truck. My only regrett is that I shold have taken pictures of the carnage more often....some of it is darn interesting. Once the fella that I used to help on ocassion had me looking for things in his spare parts collection in his hauler that he could leave at home in order to make room for some other spares... When I mentioned he had a entire tote with spare steering wheels and that I imagined one would be enough he says....... "well once I broke two"...I am like how? I never did get an answer lol

Just curious.....do any of these racers tear down and inspect their parts after the season is over? It seems these parts are a little spendy and a little Manaflux or Dye Pen migh go a long way??

I figured they would...just curious because you said in the other post that the shaft had been there for 10 years. I guess no mandatory time replacement.....run it till it fails.

as i stated in the other post. while most teams do mag. some guys don't due to $$ or lazy. usually they will see a crack and replace them but this guy just ran it untill it poped.

camo
12-16-2002, 10:49 PM
oops sorry.

the axle guy just ran his till it broke. the spool guy actually fawked up. if you read goat1 reply he is probally correct. the guy ran it with an axle that was to short and it was engaging out near the end which but the load where it was not designed to be. the axles need to end right under the ring gear.
