: Shackle ...?
flatblack83 01-13-2010, 05:34 PM Look at the shackle in this pic behind the header....It it sitting on a slight hill with a full tank of gas but is that normal...? How far do they usually move side to side..?...Shackles will be shortened soon, maybe 6inch instead or 7.25. It is close to the header but ill fix that.

weld a piece of metal in the middle of the shackle for extra strength. it doesn't look tooooo bad.
flatblack83 01-13-2010, 06:15 PM The shackle angle itself is a lil steep, ill prob use a shorter shackle and weld a piece between the 2 pieces to make them more sturdy like you said. Still thinking of plating the frame and move it up and forward to get a better angle. Im still curious tho how bad is it to be angled in , i guess ill have to put it on level ground and see what happens.
spink7124 01-13-2010, 06:49 PM Turn the steering wheel all the way to lock and cut the key off, then get under your truck and look at how bad the shackles are deflecting!
I have a brand new set of 52's and crossover steering in my truck and the shackles twist so much that my steering won't even put the knuckles on the stops.
I also think that setups like this greatly increase the likelihood of death wobble; the springs are just to soft.
My shackles deflect so much in fact, that if I measure the steering travel on the axle at the tie rod from full lock to full lock I barely get 7".
TAWL_BOY 01-13-2010, 07:51 PM Then you need a panhard or at hydro steering.
flatblack83 01-13-2010, 08:43 PM Have hydro assist, it drives nice and smooth, not alot of body roll. The truck does rather good at highway speeds...its just the angle its sitting on im not sure about.
enigma2y0u 01-14-2010, 05:08 AM When I am sitting straight in my driveway, my shackles are deflected about half that much and the other direction. I would it's normal.
TAWL_BOY 01-14-2010, 05:14 AM Sorry. I was responding to spink in my above post.
flatblack83 01-14-2010, 06:14 AM I reread that and noticed after i typed, the hydro is a good idea for him. His truck really flexes real nice... I have the alcans and new shocks with hydro assist and crossover, I still can turn lock to lock perfectly even flexed but i also have more lift.
jayz8886 01-14-2010, 07:32 AM The upper side bushings on these chevy fronts are not worth much. If you wheel the truck then I would look at replacing them with a fabbed mount that uses a large bushing.
On another note that is the spot where I have bent all my frames. They start to bend from the crossmember to the body mount. It will start getting a hump on the top of the frame around the starter. I think the problem has to do with the small upper bushing maxxing out and then the frame starts twisting coupled with the added leverage of the long shackles.
flatblack83 01-14-2010, 09:31 AM They are all poly bushings, the shackle mounts are stock size but have a nice poly bushing in them, Im not a hardcore wheeler so i thought they would be ok... Ill prob plate it i guess and see what happens...
spink7124 01-14-2010, 07:09 PM Tawl Boy,
My truck is currently apart right now getting hydro assist added, and like you have mentioned, I am fairly confident this will fix my issue.
I contemplated a panhard bar but it seems to me that no matter how soft your bushings/springs are there is always going to be some level of binding present.
irishraptor87 01-14-2010, 07:41 PM my truck and 2 of my friends trucks do this
its fairly annoying
i have hydro assist, i cross tied my shackles and it still happens, and i upgraded to the poly fabbed mount up top and poly 9/16 bolt at the bottom, still does it
tried everything, gave up and stopped looking at it
flatblack83 01-15-2010, 05:44 AM A friend of mine that is helping me with this is good at welding and fabricating, we will just plate it up, get a better shackle angle and shorten the shackles.
