: Do you ever get tired of working on your crap?I am.
Kensoffroad 10-03-2002, 01:28 PM Since last december I have been wheelin 3 times in my jeep.once last december when I tore the control arm mounts out of the body.Ok repair all that and switch to a stronger long arm setup 6 months later and about 1000$ and I get going again, discover my jeep now is undrivable on the road.
Get a trailer etc. lots more $$$.Finally go wheelin 2 weekends ago on saturday.wheel for around half a day with only one 2 hour break down on the trail.now I got rear suspension troubles:rolleyes: so I fix that on the trail and had fun for a lil while longer.
So I decide to go again on sunday maybe have a better day.Nope after ten minute of the trailer same thing happens as day before on the other side only this time it takes out my rear drive shaft and cat back exhaust :crybaby2: so after a long repair time I got back to the trailer in the dark on my front end.
Earlier this summer I took my wifes TJ to a trail building party and turning around in a tight spot on the new trail I backed into a stump that only cost a new gas tank and a skid plate which I upgraded to a kilby at this time.
So does anyone else get sick off working on your junk to? Or am I just getting worn out from lack of wheelin?

Monkeyboy 10-03-2002, 01:31 PM This might be why I have three unfinished projects and a fawked over daily driver:flipoff2:
TJBob 10-03-2002, 01:53 PM Buy a Volkswagon, I hear they are looking for drivers.
jeepmauler 10-03-2002, 02:09 PM Luckily I got to see some of the carnage in person:eek:
Right now I've got my 35spline 9" apart for the 3rd or 4th time in as many months:mad: Fawk I'm gettin tired of this crap!
Get youre junk fixed and we'll go break it again:D
WheelingPiazza 10-03-2002, 02:16 PM that would be exactly why I havent fixed one of my shakles.
Need to wheel.
Dan-H 10-03-2002, 02:49 PM maybe there is a support group for you guys :flipoff2:
broken down jeeps annonymous?
Maine Jeepah 10-03-2002, 02:55 PM I enjoy working on mine....its kinda like therapy.
When you work on/troubleshoot stuff all day, that minature ninjas put together, building or repairing a 4x4 is refreshing...and a hell of a lot easier. :D
I havent driven my Jeep in months...looks like I will be breaking in my new gears in the next week or so. :D
I need to get someone to take a pic of the shiteating grin on my face when I finally get her rolling again.

Merlin_57 10-03-2002, 02:57 PM Heh,
My Jeep is more reliable than the Suburban I bought to tow it with
Monkeyboy 10-03-2002, 03:03 PM I don't get sick of working on rigs I just need variety :D
preach 10-03-2002, 03:18 PM Mine's sitting broken right now 'cause it's the same damn axle I broke last time out.
When I get sick of it and fed up, I walk away for a while. Then go out and fix it the night before I am supposed to be on the trail.

GPERX4 10-03-2002, 04:55 PM I have had the Jeep for 23 years nowand the Matkins frame did wear me down, but most of the time it is lack of money.
Mine hasn't moved under it's own power in a few years now. :( You've at least gotten to drive yours.
My problems used to stem from a lack of time from working 50 hour weeks, having 3 kids and a wife in a medical residency.
Now I'm unemployed and am a stay-at-home dad. So I've got the same amount of time, and less money.
1BDYJ 10-03-2002, 05:52 PM I just dropped the insurance on mine......
guess that means I'm not gonna be using it soon!
As much as I want to....I do get tired of fixin it.
I'm finishin up a TJ at my shop and I've been drivin it and I think I'm gettin spoiled....rides real nice compared to the 1-ton YJ.
Think PBB should start a section for broke down old Jeepers to talk shit about their shit..........hhhhhmmmmmmmm?
tators 10-03-2002, 06:24 PM I think a person must enjoy working on their jeep as much as wheeling, I enjoy them both about the same..
I look forward to a trailride the same a jeep project/upgrade
Sometimes I get to do both at the same time!!! (trailside repairs!)
Maybe 4wheeling isn't for you....
ATV's appear to be pretty low maintenance compared to the time you get to spend on the trail...

Bald1 10-03-2002, 07:15 PM I like to wheel, way more than work on my junk. Upgrading stuff is allright, fixing shit wears thin after a while. In the last year I've put in a new motor, tranny, blew 2 d shafts, chased down an electrical gremlin, etc...I have an abusive relationship with my jeep:D

Kicker 10-03-2002, 07:59 PM I haven't wheeled my Jeep since last winter. My engine and trans are nearly dead, so it doesn't have enough power to go through anything...
Been working on it for three months straight trying to get it ready for the SBC 383, TH400, NP205, Dana 44's, and SOA. So needless to say, a lot of money and time is still ahead!!
And I have to get it ready by snow fall as it is my winter vehicle!! :(
So I feel your pain!!
Chark 10-03-2002, 09:46 PM Quit pissin' and monin'...and turn wrenchs. I've only wheeled my rig 6 days this summer...and today my new Warn shafts arrived and after a 16 hr shift at my welding job.....I'm pumped, on line here and drinking a beer. I guess...either you love it....or leave it!!! I love it!!!!:flipoff2:
TJ Fan 10-03-2002, 10:40 PM Everytime I want to do some work on my crap, my wife thinks we should be spending more "quality" time together. That slows things down for me some. But her good second income helps and she never, ever bitches about the money I spend on the rig.:D

Bahahaha isn't that the truth. I'm the other culprit involved in this situation. Every time we're working on Jeeps she hunts him down to make sure "everything is going well".
I don't mind working on the Jeep, but when it's up on jack stands without axles , suspension, or interior it does seem to be an overwhelming task. Every time I look at it I hope it doesn't turn into my kitchen project (I haven't had a kitchen in four years, just bare studs..).
60WILLYSCJ 10-04-2002, 09:26 AM I always thought Jeeps are made to be worked on, it is just part of the sport, course if you dont want to work on it dont use it.
buy a Jeep,
make some personal mods so its yours,
use it hard till you find the weakest link and get a good drenaline charge in the process.
drive it home if you can
wrench on it till the day before the next run
use it harder till you find the next weakest link and get a good drenaline charge in the process.
repeat until the weakest link is stronger than the your pucker power.
havent found that spot yet
sooner or later I have to believe I'll reach a point where the only maintainance will be preventive and new add ons.
At least you can fix it... there is nothing worse than running onto a broke down rig on the trail and a driver who has no idea how to fix it
OCNORB 10-04-2002, 10:03 AM ANybody else have this problem??-- I can get motivated to work on other people's junk , but when it comes to fixing my own I get frustrated and don't get to it. I keep my wife's Heep and a few friends rigs running strong, but I can barely keep the battery charged on my rig. Now if I could just find some friends that were like me!!!!:flipoff2:
Dust Puppy 10-04-2002, 10:36 AM i know what you guys mean. last winter i was breaking stuff left and right so may i sold the axles ant tore the jeep down in may. last night i got most of the issues resolved and actually ran it down the road.
you tend to get completly burned out working on a project this long with no end in sight. hopefully the test run on my junkz will be this weekend. that way i can find all the crap i have to change or fix or redo.

Doc Johnson 10-04-2002, 10:43 AM Do something else for a while. I get sick of it too every now and then.
Mark_R 10-04-2002, 12:33 PM Well this POR newbie enjoy's working on his junk. :flipoff2: Be it changing the oil, replacing the transmission or simple cleaning it up after a day of hard wheeling. Something therapeutic about working on it.
Back to the trans swap.........
Kensoffroad 10-04-2002, 02:27 PM well I have made arrangments with guys to sell my bead locks tires, suspension, and winch bumper then I gotta see whats left to sell and what needs to go under the TJ.then I will have a pile of cash and vigor for a fresh start. Its the money thing more then anything that bothers me latley its been costing about 1000$ a day to go wheelin. Anyone remember before when you just lifted a rig and took it wheelin before swappin stuff was in style when you broke stuff you just went down to the junk yard and got the part of a stocker.Oh well weekend is here Im sure I will get fired back up with mass amounts of :D
jeepmauler 10-04-2002, 06:33 PM Hey Ken,wheres the problem here?http://www.ramseyoffroad.com/RP_57.jpg :flipoff2:
Kensoffroad 10-04-2002, 07:51 PM thats ok had a few Limon and DP now its all good ready for tomorrow
Magoo 10-05-2002, 12:46 AM I bought a basket case Flatfender 18 months ago for $500, $3k later and all thats left are some little PITAs. That and I need more $$$ to do most of those PITAs(exhaust, steering joints, PS lines, and front driveline). Time to take out a student loan! :D
I feel better already, thanks guys! :flipoff2:
Mr Zed 10-05-2002, 01:37 AM Yeah - it gets old at times, but the money portion sucks way more, unless it's fixing something stupid that was done through stupidity, then that sucks wayer more, but fixing something that was done through stupidity that takes a big toll on the wallet, then that sucks wayest more, but, then again, there is the stupidily fix that requires large donations from the wallet that occur over, and over again that sucks wayerest mostest.
JEEPRZ 10-05-2002, 07:17 AM I hate gettin held up on money. I usually try to have all the big parts I need for a project ahead of time, but 99% of the time the plan changes mid project...Fine example...This past May, I went to replace the rear SOA leafs on my CJ for the last time. I was tired of these things wearing out and wanted to do coils, but didnt have the time. Well, long story short, a leaf spring swap turned into a -3 link conversion -into a front and rear 3 link-into a front and rear 3-link with a axle swap. Now the Jeep is out there with no axles, some links and crossmembers on the ground, no cage, and a overwealming curse.
Good news is, next week I should be getting the Rockwells. Gonna try and keep it low, so the engine needs to be moved, the frame needs some work to clear the diff, the fenders gotta go so the new tube ones can go in to clear the 48"s. This all started as a leaf spring replacement
bigdude 10-05-2002, 10:23 AM All you need is 1-tons and a 4-banger. I can't break shit :D
Chrisjeep7 10-05-2002, 10:50 AM I like working on my stuff almost more than wheeling it! but the only thing that gets me donw is compromising because of lack of money. my jeep is on jack stands with no axles under it. i just sold my dana 44 and 60 that i had custom made for $950 :D so now i have the money to get the dana 60 but then i need a welder to outbaord the springs so if i have the 60 i can only look at in :( then i sold a car to a buddy that he has not paid me for(that was my welder money....this sucks) but i am still having fun!
As for fixing stuff that I broke I hate that but upgradeing with new parts is too much fun! Maybe that’s why I have no money….
MNBen 10-05-2002, 12:23 PM In many ways, Bigdude has it right. If you aren't running mud or sand a lot, a smaller engine block is probably the way to go. A 4 cylinder is far less likely to break drivetrain parts, but has enough to turn the tires if you have gears. Over build your axles, and driveshafts, run a smaller engine, and you probably will not need to replace 1/2 the stuff you do.
FULLSIZE 10-05-2002, 09:08 PM i got tired of working on my crap. thats why i sold my jeep :flipoff2:
now i have a whole different set of problems;)

Dude! I have the same problem. I helped a buddy install every suspension part on his XJ two or three times, made some ss brake lines for him, helped him build and install a D44, welded on a new muffler and cat on his 83 Nissan Sentra and who knows what else. I just can't get motivated to work on my own junk. Tell ya what, move up to Portland, OR, and I'll work on yours if you work on mine!! :D
By biggest problem, is that I'm a full time mechanic. After workin on cars all day, do you think I want to come home and work on cars? Uh...NO...

I agree with tators here.
I know it can be frustrating at times. But I meet people all the time that I'd like to say "Maybe 4wheeling isn't for you...." to. Not to be an ass, but I think some people are naive about the amount of time and money it takes to wheel and keep wheeling.........after shit starts breaking.
John Deere Ranger 10-07-2002, 08:17 AM I just completed the rig in my sig.......and people see it and they say sweet truck..... but they don't realize the amount of time i spent on that truck..... I kept a pretty accurate log book of time swaping in everything including MANY trips to the hardware store for ONE lil thing and it took me about 450 hours to build it and I didn't have help building it...... I might be slow but its done and I'm proud of what I did and I love the truck..... Through the 6 month build up it...... the relief you have when you climb that hill..... the hummm of your boggers ridding down the road...... how it looks all flexed up for the poser shots...... its a blast.... due to and exhaustion of $$$$$$$$$ trying to finish the truck before school started back i can't take it to any real trails prob till spring untill then i get to play on my home testing grounds..........
but to all of those who have problems workin on you junk...... get to work......... its a blast when it gets done...........
