: 60 drw hubs macined to srw cost

As the title states I am wondering what I can expect to pay a local machinist to machine the drw wms off, the "bulge" and the area that would be the new wms. I've read the 60 bible and it seems like it would be fairly easy for someone with the right tools.

Trying to see if its worth buying SRW hubs or just having the DRW hubs machined down.

It'll be cheaper to have them machined. New hubs are going to cost upwards of $300 (you may find some cheaper here, Ebay, or some vendor maybe), so use that as a guideline.
I can get it done here for a case of beer. *shrug*

Whether or not it's a good idea is open for much debate. :D

I would say around $100 bucks from some one you dont know but i could be wrong.

i've been runnin chey dully hubs with the outer flange machined of for 8 years now with no problems. 42" tsl and for a while they even had a $h!t load of water in them. :flipoff2:

I forget the machining time.. I know Reddman did some and he said it took a good while, but no idea what setup he used or any of the particulars... But still, I'd say $100 sounds like a good ballpark.

thanks for the replies guys... A guy I know has a DRW 60 and a SRW 14(which I only need the 8lug hubs and shafts) for 700 bucks.. I figure I can sell my 6lug 14hubs and machined down axle shafts for about 500 or so.

swalldog.. glad to see you havnt had any problems with yours.. I plan to run either 40ltb or 42sx

Do you know any maintenance men at a local factory or mill. My neighbor is a maintenance man at a local steel mill and took mine to work with him and did them for free.

if you know anyone who can get parts at cost at your local GM dealership you can get brand new hubs with rotors and races already installed for $158 bucks apiece....if you need rotors anyway it's the way to go

Not anymore. There's a thread about how they're discontinued now. :D

I've machined them down for local people several times. I get $120 for the pair but that was just a price I figured was fair for the amount of time involved.

This is a little butch but I just ground the DRW hubs down with my 7" grinder. I cut the flange off with a friends plasma cutter and then ground them down. Now I need to drop them off with a machine shop and since I did most of the work all they need to do is clean them.

Should reduce the overall cost of the machine time since I did all the bull work. Heres some fuzzy Pics.

they are definately not discontinued. i just got one tuesday and ordered 2 more friday for this week. they are on back order, but we put a rush shipment on so i get them within a week. $144.84 my price since i work at the dealer. and if ya can find someone local to to get ya one for there price i would go that route. i had my DRW hubs turned down and they came out good. now add the cost of 16 studs, 16 lugnuts, and rotors. i sold my DRW hubs that were machined down and it almost paid for the GM ones, which come with hubs, rotors, races, and studs.

just my $.02

good idea to start it off with a plasma and grinder... I might consider doing that before going to a machinist

Looks like ill have to get some srw hubs. Are they hard to change from drw to srw dana 60?Will the brakes still match up?

I just turned a set down yesterday and it took me 3 hours from start to finish. BUT I have not operated a lathe in 15 years since HS shop class, so there was some learning in the beginning....

I'd pay some one $100 to do it. If they wanted anymore I would do it myself for sure.

i have a ammco brake lathe at work. i bet if i set them up in it like cutting a rotor on the hub i could cut mine down and look 90-95% like those. just have to set it up as a drum cut to feed it out for the main body. then set it up for rotor to true the face up.

might go threw a few bits but a pack of bits is cheep.

:homer: somthing to try soon mabye :homer:

4.5" I think... I can measure tonight. I basically turned them to the same diameter as the original part of the hub that stuck out in front of the dually flange - just did one more turn on the full length to make them look clean and shinny!

x2, when i had my duallys durned down, i went to 4.5". it will give you the smooth, shiny, nice and straight look.

I turned a set for myself. I'd definitely buy the new ones from GM if you can find them. That's a smokin' deal.

id say its pretty safe, just dont turn it down into the welds and id think as long as its trued up on the mounting surface youd be alright. i dont see just one of the 8 little ears breaking all by itself.

I just cut a set last night,I put them in the band saw and made a total of 8 cuts to get the flange off.Chucked them in the lathe and turned them down then I drilled out the 8 bolt holes on the rotor and the hub and reused the stock studs there plenty long enough and this is the third set I have done in the past 8 years and never had any issues. :D start to finish about 3 hours.

he did both for 60.00...

need to pick up new wheel studs and seals

if you go too far youll run into the weld. you should also clean up the mountung surface a "little".
