: Steering gearbox woes

Been wheeling my CJ7 for a little over 2 years now. Last April, while on a gravel road and not beating it up, turned a corner and the steering stuck all the way to the right.

I replaced the steering gearbox and everything worked well. Since then, I have wheeled maybe 6 more good days. Today, same thing happened - I could turn right but not left. Trying to turn left rewards you with a solid stop, zero movement of the steering wheel possible while movement to the right is perfectly fine.

This gearbox should be under warranty but will take several days to arrive. I'm more interested in things I can do to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the first place.... had to haul my CJ (with the front wheels off) out of some pretty nasty terrain with a helpful stranger's truggy and it suffered collateral damage in the process.

I'm running a mainly stock carbureted 4.2 with the Saginaw canned ham pump, stock steering gearbox, dropped CJ pitman arm and a Wagoneer D44 axle with 36" tires. It is not high-steer.

Any ideas how I can make the next one last longer?
