: 4 link
fjdan 10-03-2002, 11:16 PM i'm sure someone has done a 4 link in the rear here in this site but does anybody have any pics and also i was thinking of using coils from an xj and what do you think is a good system tp use like heim joints or not or radius arm bushings or not
coiledbj42 10-04-2002, 12:59 AM search for the fj45 truggy project
Medusa 10-04-2002, 08:09 AM The link to the truggy progect mentioned above is here (http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~jrice/cruiser/FJ45/Suspension/Springs.html)
I don't think you would be particularly pleased with the Jeep coils. I am using heim joints on my links. They provide greater movement, but they are loud and wear out after a few years. Johnny joints are much quiter, afford less movement and are a bit spendy. What will work best for you is really dependent on what you want it to do and whether or not you will drive it on the street.
dog walker 10-04-2002, 08:22 AM I really like the way you mounted your springs! (S&N style!) I'm gonna tear mine back down in a month or so and re-do mine like yours, not only for the clearance and looks, but I need to lower my rear about 3 inches. Other than that, I'm very pleased with the performance of my 1/4 eliptic, and appreciate all the help and advice of Trevor and Jason from S&N Fab.
fjdan 10-04-2002, 08:49 AM i run my truck on the road are the buggy leaves going to be stiff enough for everyday driving that was why i was leaning toward coils they seem a little more road friendly what coils would you recommend
Medusa 10-04-2002, 09:05 AM Jeff... Thanks for the kind words on the spring hangers. In the original design, I was worried about the front of the springs hanging down so far and hanging up on rocks. Recessing them up into the frame makes a lot of sense.
I won't know until I get the cab and bed on, but I am pretty sure I am going to be awfully high in the rear end as well. I am hoping to compensate for that by lowering the box relative to the cab. I am glad to hear that you like your suspension:D
FJdan.. If I were going to drive mine on the road I would want to use adjustable shocks and make sure thay are set as firm as possible. Coils would be better on the road -- I don't, however, have any experience to share about them.
fjdan 10-04-2002, 06:15 PM THANKS FOR ALL OF THE HELP AND KEEP IT COMING BY THE WAY THAT SYSTEM YOU GOT ON THE FJ45 LOOKS PRETTY COOL I LIKE IT ONLY I THINK IT WOULD BE A LITTLE TO CRAZY FOR THE ROAD BUT I DEFFINETLY LIKE THE INVERTED 4LINK LOOKS GOOD GIVES ME ALOT OF IDEAS I HOPE YOU DONT MIND IF I USE SOME OF THIS INFO ON MY OWN RIG
KrustyKruiser 10-04-2002, 07:46 PM That rocks That you are going to step those springs into your frame jeff that will make your setup just that little bit more bitchin.
The idea i have always had it to use a leaf or two under the main leaf to add force to the droop side just like a standard leaf spring setup do reduce body roll and help side hilling.
Also i always invisioned taking a slightly lighter duty spring pack with thinner leafs more like a cruiser pack, and cutting them in half off center, and stagering the two sides together so that you have twice as many leafs,(remember i said thinner leafs keep that in mind before you think it is too thick) you would not have to use all of them either. This should give you a great spring rate, and if u used really flat leafs you could get the rig lower and still maintain the stiffness in suspention that you need. Also you could have the middle of the spring rest on a huge bump stop like the Campbell rigs.
Medusa what is the reason for the inverted design. What are its advantages and disadvantages. Is everything still the same like roll center and anti squat. How about rear stear. I noticed troy fabers sniper has the same design and i doo like it. Just wondering while i still think of what i want to do with mine in a couple of months.

dieselcruiserhead 10-07-2002, 02:22 PM I don't know much about 4 link but here's a pict of a friend's setup on a minitruck. Hope it helps, you might want to do a search as I'm sure there TONS of good info either here or in general 4x4. Good luck....

Advent Horizon 10-07-2002, 02:31 PM How much clearance do those bars have?
edit: If you can't tell, I'd like more pics! :D
Box Rocket 10-07-2002, 04:09 PM from that angle, the minitruck 4 link looks like the upper links will collide with the lower ones almost immediately. If you've got a side shot it'd be nice to see how much clearance there really is.
Medusa 10-07-2002, 05:36 PM To answer Ian's question (which was actually answered in an earlier thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72228) the traditional design would not fit with my looong drivetrain I would have had to mount the link hangers right where the NP205 resides -- no problem on the driver's side, but no room at all on the passenger's side of the frame rail.
dieselcruiserhead 10-08-2002, 11:10 AM The mini truck seen belongs to a friend over in Kamus who used to work at the Samuri place down in Heber, he's done a few 4-links and I might do some work on my rig over in his mini shop in Kamus. If you want to see picts of it wheeling they're all over the Wild Yoat's site. Also, the priciple of the links is that they stay parallel to each other while the rear axle goes up and down. Therefore you'd really have to screw up to have them hit, in my opinion. The truck wheels real well I'm told, I know he competes in it and has done fairly well. Take a look at side shots here:
http://www.wildyoats.com/tracy_evans.htm , also browse around the site, lots of pretty sweet trucks with pretty sweet setups in my opinion.
fjdan 10-08-2002, 06:49 PM FOUND A SET OF COILS THEY ARE 126.5 SPRING RATE HOW DOES THAT SOUND I THINK IT SHOULD BE GOOD I HEARD THAT THAT WAS AROUND THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR A CRUISER
