: Tire limit for a 9"?
IndyCJ 10-04-2002, 06:21 AM I'm building a 9" for the CJ. 35 spline axles, spool, truss, etc
I'm planning on running 38.5" SX's on it (no, don't ever plan on going bigger unless I want to be divorced. :flipoff2: )
What's everyone's opinion on 'maximum' tire size for it? Is that doable?
TIA

StudNuts 10-04-2002, 06:36 AM Youll be fine as long as you run the standard low pinion, if you run curries HP, youll grenade it. The 35 splines are an 1.5 shafts. The ring gear actually gets a better contact patch and stronger when you go numerically higher on the 9".
IndyCJ 10-04-2002, 06:48 AM Yea, I'm running just a 'regular 9'. Low pinion. I'm only limited on gears by my front D44. I don't really feel to confident running 5.13's or higher in my front D44.
So I'll probably go with 4.88's front and rear and call it good.
John Deere Ranger 10-04-2002, 07:12 AM yes VERY doable
rkcrawl 10-04-2002, 07:32 AM Indy, is this for the rear? If you are interested in the HP 9, touch base RockYJ on this board from Essentially Offroad. He's been putting lots of the HPs in rear 9s. He is running 38s on his YJ and competeing in ERoCC....

skulltoy 10-04-2002, 07:36 AM I run 38.5 sx's on my 9", with 5.13's and no problems. I also have a dana 44 in front. 5.13's are ok. My friend has the same axle set up, but with 5.89's and 5.83's and 35" claws, he ripped all the teeth off his ring gear.

Yea, it's for the rear. I'm not really interested in the HP9. I'm doing this on a CJ6 frame and I'm not really concerned (that much) about driveline angles. (I still chuckle to myself how long that damn frame is. :D )
It's a 9 out of a lincoln, 63.5" wide. It's in great shape, and I got a good deal on it. (Thanks Tim!) Right now it's on the back burner, I'm getting ready to get the frame sandblasted tomorrow and start boxing the thing, so I'm not quite ready to start on the rear anyway, but I thought I'd ask everyone's opinion, just for shits and giggles. :D
Aggro 10-04-2002, 08:27 AM I run 40" tsl's on my lenco equipped 9" rear with 35 spline shafts. It laughs.
Danger Ranger 10-04-2002, 08:47 AM I *had* a 9" with 5.43's a detroit with stock 31 spline shafts turning 38" tsl's under my ranger. I like the Go-pedal alot and the 9" never failed me. The damn 44 is what gave up.
9" Good :D

Did you have any sort of a 'special' carrier in it or anything? If what you are saying is true, I'm wondering if I would be wasting my money buying a centersection that would allow me to run 35 spline shafts.
Thoughts?
Scott@Rockstomper 10-04-2002, 09:44 AM I run a 31 spline Ford van 9" with 44's. One broken shaft thus far (stock Ford, not aftermarket) with a four-cylinder but 170:1 gearing. Relatively light weight. I wouldn't stress over 35 spline and 38.5's. If you have a knack for severely extreme rockcrawling, with a big motor, and a lot of crawl, and a lot of weight, then I'd start to worry.

Umm, one per side :flipoff2:

Ok really
in a light weight vehicle with a mid sized motor, no problem running those tires. If your running a 512 BB than it would never last.....
