: Tj Cage Advice?

I am trying to design a full cage for a 98 TJ. This jeep is used for strictly off road use. I have spent hours searching for ideas on how to get the X bars behind the front seats of a TJ without them being bent and how people are tying thier cages to the frame. I have found amazingly very few pictures of these two topics. The person I am building this for wants to keep his soft top, and his rear seat. This really restricts how creative I can get and still keep it safe. Anyone have any pictures they can post to help me out?

There is the cage tie-in thread.

On the cage i did for my yj the front is tied into the rock sliders, and the rear is to the frame using tube/busing from removed trackbars. the center supports are not tied in as it would be overly redundant, since the bodymount and cage are so very close to the frame at that point and the rock slider is also bolted to that rear body mount.

I haven't made my X behind the rear seats yet, I have two little ones that go with me on every trip and i need to get them to try out some other peoples x's for access to the rear before I do it, don't want to restrict their movement in/out or have the x take up too much room in the back.

Yes, I have looked through this tread several times. I saw very few cages with the X behind the front seats. I had not found the tie in thread. Thanks.

I am going to put an X behind my seats, but it will not tie into the B pillar. It will be about 6 inches behind. it is very difficult to make it all fit without it hitting the seats.

After looking through the tie-in thread I saw no pictures of a TJ. I have done several CJ and YJs. I am looking for TJ spacific pics.

I really like this, it is exactly what I am looking for but... the owner won't let me drill through the floor. Maybe I can change his mind.

I'm sorry but do you really need someone to hold your hand throughout the process? If someone is hiring you to build them a cage you should be able to adapt the same ideas from CJs and YJs and put them into a TJ no problem. If you cannot then I personally think that you shouldn't be building their cage.

From Jeepman14wheel's pictures it looks like he did a back-half on his jeep? If so he doesn't have the rear body to contend with. But you can still do it similar to his with the X bar not tying directly into the B pillar but behind it on the C pillar tube. Or you could build the cage with an A to C pillar hoop instead of a B pillar hoop where the A and C pillars tie into it. That way you can put your X bar where ever you need it to not be bent.

No, I don't need someone to hold my hand. I am open to the fact however that someone of the hundreds of people on this board might have a better idea on how to get this accomplished than myself. If so, I would like to see a picture. I am not to proud to steal someone elses idea if it is better than mine. From what you described, I dought I would use yours even if you had posted a picture.

All of these were found in the TJ Cage Inspiration thread that was posted. If you look at these you can see that there is no B pillar "hoop" that the main structure of the cage are made with A to C pillar "hoops". Then they weld in 2 tubes to construct the B pillar with a 3rd tube across the top to tie it together. With this design you do not need to tie the X bar into the B pillar because the B pillar is not the main structure point, the A to C pillar hoops are. So you can then put the X bars behind the B pillar tied into the A to C hoops.

There is nothing wrong with either the B pillar hoop or the A to C pillar hoop.

Beat95YJ doesn't have an X bar but it could have easily been added using straight tube.

More pictures of TeenyCar's cage can be found in his build thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=495084&highlight=). It's a YJ but it is the same difference and can be adapted to fit no problem.

No, it was a custum built cage by the "Garage Hackers inc... AKA me! That is why Miguel is calling it ghetto fab, as he did help on some of it :flipoff2:

I did not do a back half, just a dovetail.

No rear seat but one would still fit with the 'X'.

It's 1 3/4 x .120 DOM, I don't know why it looks so big in the pictures.

I had the PSC full cage before this. Someone offered to buy it last winter and I took that as a good opportunity to build a two seater cage.

there is an Aussie tj where the b pillar has been raked slightly backward to accomodate the cross brace & harness bar.The owner is over 6' and he can sit comfortably
