: D44 with 5 lug partten???
oso_polar 10-04-2002, 08:02 AM Hi there, I want to do a SAS on my explorer, and I want to get a D44, and as the D30 has the same lug pattern as my explorer, I was thinking that maybe a D44 came with a 5 lug pattern.
The other thing are the gears, I have 4.10 in my rear axle, IS THERE A D30 or a D44 (5 LUG) with 4.10 gears...
Thanks in advance...:D
D44's came with a 5 on 5.5 pattern, but I am not aware of a 5 on 4.5 (?) like a Exploder has. (is that the right pattern size?)
Should be easy to find a 4cyl YJ with 4.10's in the mighty D30, and the correct bolt pattern.
thejunker 10-04-2002, 08:19 AM Your best bet would be to use wheel adapters. I do not think the hub on a D44 will fit with 5x4.5 lug pattern.
Jakesteramalamajama 10-04-2002, 08:22 AM Alright. I'm gonna cut you some slack here because you're from a different country, Newbie...
The only D44 with 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern that I know of comes in the new TJ Rubicon, but that's probably not available in your country.
There ARE other 5-lug Dana 44s, but those are 5 on 5.5.
And you COULD convert a D44 front to 5 on 4.5 using Dana 30 outers, but why would anyone want to? (Incidentally, the TJ Rubicon has D30 outers.)
Not sure about South America, but the 4-cylinder YJ Wranglers up here all came stock with a 4.10:1 geared D30. So do the 4-banger TJs unless I miss my guess. This is probably your best bet for an SAS swap.
Buena suerte,
Jake

Keith Strong 10-04-2002, 08:31 AM Get wheels with a universal bolt pattern :flipoff2:
These will fit both 5x4.5 and 5x5.5 :grinpimp:

You could convert the D44s to D30 outers? You know that the D30s from YJs/TJs outers will bolt onto some D44 that came with 5 on 5.5? If he gets a Rubicon D44, wouldn't that already be 5 on 4.5?
BTW, he's more likely to have D44s in the fronts of TJs than we are, they've had them for years, IIRC.

4Bangler 10-04-2002, 09:06 AM Yup, many export model YJ's and TJ's, as well as XJ's and all those funky weirdo models not available here at all, were available with a Dana 44 front with the uni bearing outers using 5 on 4.5 pattern. That axle would make a cool SAS swap into an Exploder, if there is such a thing as a cool swap into an Exploder.
Nice dual pattern wheels.
Sundowner 10-04-2002, 09:15 AM CHECK ON THIS,
but I think some of the early 80's late 70's Dodge 1/2 tons wtih full time front axles ahd 5 on 4.5"
I was thinking the same thing Sundowner. That's the only domestic application I've seen that is 5 on 4.5" on a 44 front. They use a unit bearing outer don't they? I can't remember seeing one with either lockouts or a drive slug type hub assembly.
4Bangler 10-04-2002, 10:44 AM Yeah, I don't think you'll find a regular internal splined hub for a Dana 44 with 5 on 4.5, the Dodge's used 5 on 4.5 with the central axle disconnect system, so the hub was basically a big drive flange.
oso_polar 10-04-2002, 10:58 AM Now I'm confused, do you know exactly what year came with 4.10, I would mind going with a D30 if that is the only option, BUT if there is a D44 with 5lug dif pattern, I can get those rims, or get some lug adapter...
What about changing the outers, since the rubicon will be coming for the next year, (I think) it would be pretty hard to find a Rubicon D44 at a junkyard, can I get, lets say a D44 from a waggy an use some D30 outers to macht the lug pattern?? what is involved in this?? what about redrilling a six lug into a 5 lug??
What D44 came with 5 lug?? Year?? Model?? Springs??
oso_polar 10-04-2002, 11:17 AM I can't get a dodge front axle... it has the t-bars brackets, and pretty sure it's not welded, it's part of the axle... so I will have to grind the axle itself, and I don't wan't to have a weaked axle....
Wich is the D44 with 4.5 5lug and 4.10's?????
tuckster 10-04-2002, 11:22 AM bienvenido chamo!
en que parte de venezuela vivas?
anyway, why don't you just go with the Dana 30 front? I think the easiest solution would be a TJ, YJ or XJ front axle with 297 joints and 4.10 gears (4 cyl).. and if you're really lucky, a high pinion, or you could mix and match components to get all of those features.
I know there are quite a few people relying on these 30's and they seem to do okay with 35" or smaller tires. And if you're going to go bigger than 35's your gears aren't going to cut it anyway... so you might as well go to a Dana 60 at that point.
That's my 2 cents.
oso_polar 10-04-2002, 11:48 AM I'm from Caracas, not too much people wanna lift an explorer, an almost anyone think on a SAS, so I need this kind of help...
Ok, I find a 92, D30, HP, same lug pattern, steering linkage, disk brakes, and springs setup, from a jeep but I don't know what gears it has....
I think this will be my best choice, and the easiest one if it has 4.10's, also the cheapiest one...
I'm running 285/75 R16 MTR so I will run these on the new axle, I'm planning on running 36-9.00 for hard wheeling trips, but I have seen some XJ and CJ with this setup for daily driver, and hasn't hear of any broken axles.... maybe it's a metter of time...
Oxjockey 10-04-2002, 11:53 AM Hey, I saw a SOA CJ in Aruba, can't be that unpopular!
If it's a 4 cyl, it's probably got the 4.10s. That sounds like your best bet, but you'll want the axleshafts (& 297x ujoints) from the 95 YJs.

tuckster 10-04-2002, 11:58 AM Oxjockey, were you in a Aruba just for vacation or did you live there?
I lived in Venezuela, in Caracas and Guarico.. and I also lived on the island of Curacao, right next to Aruba..
Anyway, I think the dana 30 should hold up just fine, aren't most of the trails more mud than rock anyway? I would probably find a Dana 30 with 4.10 gears, swap it in, and if the joints or shafts let go, find some '95 or newer 297's to replace them.

Holiday. Saw a couple worth noting, but this was like 3 years ago. The chick at the butterfly farm had a nice CJ7, too.
