: Sand dunes?
felipecj 01-22-2010, 04:10 PM My buddies and i live in Auburn, AL. We have been talking of taking our quads to the sand dunes eventually. I've heard of Glamis, but that is really far away for us. I also know about Little Sahara in Oklahoma, but that's roughly 14 hours from us. My question is if there are any other sand dunes closer to my area. We'll make the trip to little sahara if we need to, just wondering what else is in our area, i guess in the southeast at least.
montecarlo31 01-22-2010, 04:43 PM Glamis is a once in a lifetime event. If you can do it do it. It will be well worth it and it's not a bad drive if you have 3 people. If your dragging a toyhauler make sure you leave the tanks empty (130 gallons of water is a crap load of weight to tote up some of those hills west of Texas.
wildcatkit52 01-22-2010, 08:05 PM I live in AR and go to LS quite often. In AL right now so I missed the last trip. Missed the last few years worth being in Iraq and such.
It is a blast.

felipecj 01-24-2010, 06:19 PM Thanks for the pics. I was kinda hoping there were some dunes closer to where i live, but the more i look into it, i'm sure the 15hr. trip to Little Sahara would be worth it. When i first got into quads i had 2 friends from Oklahoma that moved to AL, and they would go to little sahara on a yearly basis.
What advice would yall have to someone going to the dunes for the first time? It will be a year or so till i make this trip, I just want to be prepared.
wildcatkit52 01-24-2010, 06:27 PM It is good to go with someone that has gone before for the first few times. If you have friends that have been you should get them together and all go out so they can show you the ropes.
RockTacoAU 01-28-2010, 08:06 AM Lets do this, I am looking for sand tires on ebay as I type :D
HardcorewannabeXJ 01-28-2010, 09:04 AM Nothing like the dunes out west. Sand mountain is my personal favorite, and only 1.5 hours away, and we go to Oregon every year for dune fest. Sand in a pine tree forest next to freshwater lakes = bad ass!

felipecj 01-28-2010, 04:04 PM I am loving these pics!! Gonna be a fun trip one day! Damn Oregon is a good drive too!
What does everyone run as far as paddle tires go? I've seen people saying to go for 6 or 8 paddle tires. Plus what size should you run? I run 20in. tires now, should i just stay with that or go bigger or smaller for sand tires?
Mr. Astounding 01-29-2010, 11:55 PM if you want to know paddles it really depends on what type of rider you are and also your bike just because there are so many different type of paddles. i personally like to run the 8 paddle haulers.

You don't want any less than 8 paddles on a 450R and not more than 10 unless you got some serious power added. 20in is fine. You want to get a good tire though. Don't follow the trends of gimmick tires. No 10 inch wheels! Go with a set of 8 inchers or nines at the most.
Scats are what you want, haulers are the usual pick!
HardcorewannabeXJ 02-01-2010, 10:24 AM x3 on the Haulers. I run a 20x10x10 7 paddle on my 450, I only bought the 7 paddle because it was a good deal on a set of barely used.
A new 450 has enough power to turn up to a 9-10 paddle. It depends on how you want to ride. Straight paddles like haulers don't turn for shit so you actually have to Ride the bike and not just Drive it. But they haul ass in a straight line. The V paddles make it easy to turn but don't have good holeshot performance and are usually cheap ass Chinese junk.
A 20" tall is enough, although I might be purchasing a set of 21's on an 8" wheel for Oregon because when it gets tracked out, or you get stuck on the side of a sand mountain in a tree shoot the loss of ground clearance hurts you. After being stuck for hours I want some big old balloony tires for this year.
wildcatkit52 02-01-2010, 11:00 AM Both of my R's have 10 paddles.(Keep in mind they aren't stock) The red one on 9 inch wheels and the other on 8 inch wheels. Tire size are the same but as you can see the tires don't agree. The tires they use can vary.
Go with the 8 inch wheels and 8 or 10 paddles and you should be fine.

wildcatkit52 02-01-2010, 11:08 AM On my buggy (Stolen March 31/April 1 2009) I ran these that the builder put on it. Not quite enough for the CBR954RR engine!

felipecj 02-04-2010, 06:26 PM Awesome pic man. This thread has taught me a lot as far as what to expect and some of what to get for my quad to be ready.
If you make it out try and hit Glamis and Pismo, kinda nice railing around the dunes with the beach as a back drop :smokin:
felipecj 02-04-2010, 07:05 PM Just checked mapquest, and glamis is 29hrs and just under 2000 miles from where i am. I think little sahara will be just fine for my first trip to the dunes, but keep the pics and stories coming!
Shram 02-07-2010, 09:24 AM Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan kickass as well. Might be a little closer for ya.

LS is fun, there's also some dunes up in Michigan, unsure how far from 'bama it is though.

Headin' to Glamis on Thursday for Presidents weekend and the full week after :grinpimp:

Buy your whip and tires down there at the dunes, save on shipping and they always got smokin' deals goin on since they buy in large bulk. If ya get your whip down there, they are lifetime guarantee'd against breaking. I think my buddy just paid 210 or 220 for sand stars on douglas wheels. Your knobby fronts will work just fine...
Waynoka is cool, you can take the trail to town and go eat, fill up at the gas station, etc. The Ampride up at North camp has really good eats... We usually stay at cowboy camp... Bring quarters, the showers are coin operated.
... I will say after riding Idaho this summer, Little Sahara is very very LITTLE!!!
heres a few pics from LS:

Copenhagen 02-08-2010, 01:01 AM lived in twin falls for 2 years, and never made the drive to St anthony's
I really wish i would have...
If you come to oregon, watch out for the big ass holes in the sand, we call them "witch eyes"... The wind makes big ass holes in the sand, biggest i seen was about 8 feet. They appear out of nowhere..
Was riding florence a few years back, and my buddy in front of me, disappeared. I follow his track, and come up on a witch eye (this was in april) full of water, his bike was in the bottom completely submerged, and he was scrambling to get out.. I guess the water was pretty cold:laughing::shaking:. Had to bring a truck out there to pull the bike out. 05 crf 450 got completely rebuilt. It was in there a good 2 hours before we got the truck out there.
llvllaximus 02-08-2010, 04:20 PM just youtube glamis. youll know what to do then!:flipoff2:
spencurai 02-11-2010, 04:38 AM I love little sahara AKA sand Mountain in central Utah but I recently discovered the Killpecker dunes north of Rock Springs wyoming. Nobody I know has ever heard of them but they are AWESOME. The wind never stops blowing there and the dunes get psycho tall and steep.
This dune was over 100' tall and vertical at the top. I hit it at about 65 to keep glued down. You have to watch out for the natural gas wells because they get covered by the dunes and come out on the other side...a little scary!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3063/2842863756_ce0d244348_o.jpg
The wind blows so constantly that the sand covers over the snow and creates layering. In the summer the snow melts off to create water for the desert elk herd that lives on the dunes.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3116/2842863746_4720bdbf44_o.jpg
You have to watch out for the low spots that are drifted over...this one was about 3' deep and not a tree in sight to winch from. I dug for a while to get out of this one.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3098/2842863754_e98c2ed7c6_o.jpg
This one is from Sand Mountain in central Utah...we always go during the winter months. There is usually only a few inches of snow in any spot and you get the thousands and thousands of acres to yourself.
