Well my new motor (crate 350) arrived on Wed, and I'm working on painting it now.

But here's the cool part....I just ordered all the stuff I need for running propane. Come awn:D :D :D

This will be the first BENDER:skull:RIG on propane. Then after Frostoberfest we're cutting off the rear, adding ten inches of wheelbase, and re-configuring the cage.:D

cool man! Why are you swapping motors, though? You said you weren't sure if it was a 350 or 327 under the hood as it sits, right??

propane smells funny...

The 350 (327?) that's in there right now is wasted. I'm tired of all the drips, and the blow by that burns my eyes. My bro-in-law has an auto repair shop, so I got a real good deal on the motor.

I used the propane guy up in Sac. that Jimmy told me about. I think he was the same guy that set up Lance and Roggy. He set me up with EVERYTHING I need to just bolt it on with the exception of the tanks.

I like the inline 6 alot, but this rig already had the V8 when I got it..........

It's a little bent up, I seem to have a special talent for mashing the left quarter:rolleyes:

Our main objective with this is inboarding the F150 springs that will add 10" to the wheelbase. We're also gonna narrow the rear, mount the tanks in the bed, build a tool tray over the tanks, and add a Baby Beard seat for Mini Mustard that might be on the way (crossing fingers). We're gonna keep the FJ40 lines in our new side panels, including some FJ fender flares;)

You propane people...Can you switch to gas w/out swapping hardware? I remember reading about a TrailBlazer in a mag (Trailer Boats, I think) that you turned it off, flipped a switch, and it ran on gas again.

Mostly interested in the 6's here :) ill be nice and answer, i run 2 forklift bottles . my rig never sees the street. its more of an hours thing with propane than it is milage really, but i only know trail wise and mines a v-8 im sure the 6's do better.

How handy, a hour meter is going in this weekend anyway :D

For everyone else, it looks like ona 4 cyl engine, you get about 8 hours of continuous use out of a forklift bottle, and factor in an hour less per 2 cyls.

I think you're just gonna have to go by trial and error for the first few bottles to get a feel for it, at least that's what I figured I'm gonna have to do.

I can get a rough idea of what to expect from Jimmy, but our rigs are a bit different, as well as driving style and where we wheel.

Anyway, I pretty much got the routing order figured out, one question though. Can the regulator, the thing the hot water goes into, be mounted vertical on the firewall? Also, does the line pressure drop alot after the regulator?

It has to be mounted verticly with the vent at the bottom so that condesation does not build up inside.

My 82 FJ40 is just like that, over 200000 in the 2f with minimal service. The rig this is in had the 350 in it when I bought it, however if you wanna give me everything I need to "re-Toyotaize" it, I might be willing to go back :p

Huh that's funny, my brother in law has a chevy truck with over 300k on the clock and it's all original. mmmmm Must be an quirky chevy thing.

Yeah but who wants to drive a snail for 265,000 miles?? My 350 may only last 150,000 or 200,000 but I will get there a hell of a lot faster. :flipoff2:

95% of the taxi's here are on LPG.Lots of work trucks too,so yes it's good for a DD.It's really good if the engine is built for it.

I always wanted to do a lpg conversion on my FJ40. That is until I started to drive a lpg truck on the job. I'd take a big Pasadena on the whole lpg conversion if I were you. Unless gas went back up to $2.00 a gallon.

Sorry for the dumb question but don't you have to run stainless valves with propane? Are there any other mods one would have to do on a stock "F" in order to convert it to stank gas? Finally, what does the conversion kit run$$$?

since the forklifts run on propane, all you have to do is locate a yard and pull the "conversion" off it....... cut and dried. cool thing i liked about running propane was pulling the dipstick on a farm truck after 4000 miles and looking like i just did an oil change, and that was in DUSTY conditions. :D

Here's some more progress. I'm staying home today to get it all finished up, and we're goin to the Hammers tommorow:D

Check those valve covers, the only bling I would allow, and since they're polished alumimium I should still be in the good graces wiht the Cruiser Gods;)

One with the air cleaner on. It used to be anodized gold :barf:

Some of the propand stuff all mounted up. I'm kinda bummed about all the hoses an lines I have to run for this stuff, I hate a cluttered lookin engine compartment.

I'll post a few more during the day as I go along;)

Mustard Dog, your engine compartment embarrasses me, that is one CLEAN, organized Cruiser! Congratz, it's a dream of mine to clean up all the wiring in my Cruiser, I just can't seem to get focused!

ATTN Mustard Dog I should have mentioned this before. But did you use an LPG intake gasket when you put on that intake. It is more important than people think. It blocks off the flow off exhause that passed under the carb to vaporize gas. But it just heats the propane and makes it PING. NOT GOOD. All i had to do is go to the local parts store and ask for an intake manafold gasket for a SBC with lpg/ natual gas. It is not the end of the world if you don't have it. I don't think jimmy does, i put mine on when i put on an aluminum intake. I also recoment an aluminum intake, because they help take heat away from the propane better than cast and weigh like 30 pounds less.

I'll let you all know how this run at the Hammers goes with this set up on Mon. The rig is going straight from there to the BENDER:skull:BARN to have the rear end cut up and tubed and narrowed:eek: I kinda feel guilty cutting up a 35 year old frame:(

Well this weekend didn't go as well as planned:( Serious overheating issues.

Looks like I didn't have the timing correct and it was running way too lean. Rammy suggested on Sun morning that we advance it a little and it made a HUGE difference. So it looks like I need to make a few calls and do some tweaking to get it right.

It "ran" just fine. I didn't have any power and it got super hot though:(

The mo-home is for the trips, I do the three hour drive to Ridgecrest fairly often just to hang out with the boys.

The rig is running BITCHEN, I'm way happy with it. I pull up in front of the pad, rev the motor, yell out to Tommy to get in. I think to my self,"Self, lets light up these locked 36's on blast off." :D

SM420, first gear, rev and dump..........BAM. There went the u-joint at the pinion:( I didn't even get a chirp out of it :emb:

That sucks. Seems to happen like that though. friend has a '68 mustang we put Tremec 5 spd into and is showing off to a friend first ride and blows up the rear Ujoint... Does not even get the tires smoking.

Our club was having a few friendly little competitions at the last "fun caravan", and on the starting line, a guy with a nice 350/465/205 combo revved his motor to around 4000rpm, and dumped the clutch in 2nd gear, 4-hi, on grass. (35" boggers)

BLAM! Didn't move an inch. Sheared the 465 output shaft clean off.

Sorry to ask a stupid Newbie question, but what do I need to look for to make LPG work on my 2F, will I need an adapter to make the Carb work, that is my only real concern.

Its not gonna be just an adapter for the carb, it'll be a whole new unit. There's a company down in San Diego called Pac Lift (I think that's the name) that can help you out;)
