: I.H columns?
chris fresh 01-24-2010, 07:52 AM so i'm going to be getting into the 800 build this week and i don't have a column. In the beginning i figured i wasn't going to use it and sold it to a friend who was doin a 68 800.with all the other stuff ready to go,i need to have something in place to kind of get an idea of box mounting / angle location.
around the corner from my house theres an old guy who has two old I.H dump trucks that are sitting in a field,he said i could have whatever off of them i wanted, both trucks are 345's wich was my first thought when i was hunting a 392,but now i'm thinkin column for the 800. is there much difference between the two? either way i have to mod something to mate to the scout 2 box.i figure he will let me have the whole set up for 10 bucks if i pull it all myself.
another consideration is rebuilding it,can i get parts for it? or will i have to be tied down to someone like scout rip off .com to get what i need.
what say you

Something on that has to be worth 10$. But... I'd rather look for something that would use a common wiring harness in case you need parts or support.
IH454SSII 01-24-2010, 08:41 AM Not sure about the 800 but the Scout II columns use a lot of chevy parts.
JetFxr 01-24-2010, 08:46 AM Chris, I've got a couple Scout II and truck columns laying around. You are welcome to one on your shipping dime.

I'd do this...
JetFxr 01-24-2010, 09:09 AM Shoot me a PM
guidolyons 01-24-2010, 10:41 AM Unless you are wanting to keep it IH, grab a GM steering column from a 73-87 truck, van, etc, you can even find them with the tilt column if you are so inclined. It makes getting parts, kustom steering wheels, and getting your steering column mounted up a whole lot easier. Another plus on the wiring, since they are popular with the hot rod crowd, they make the pigtail that plugs into the harness in the steering column for the horn turn signals, etc if you don't get it when you pull the column from the donor.
Brandon 01-24-2010, 07:13 PM no complaints with my stock column, only drawback is no hazard switch but otherwise it is fine.
levi1a 01-24-2010, 07:18 PM Chris I also have a spare SII column and am a bit closer than Robert if it helps you with the shipping $$ You are welcome to it. It needs and ignition switch, and someone jerry rigged a comb for the blinker arm , but hey it's free so ...:flipoff2: Just hollar if you need it

hazards are over rated

thanks man, think i got one lined up from a nice guy on here. :D,it's real tempting with a comb for a blinker arm,if it was a brush.............i'de be all up on that chumpy!
JetFxr 01-29-2010, 07:20 PM Chris, you get the column?
ChiScouter 01-30-2010, 12:01 AM About a million moons ago Doug Shailor made a big deal out of using Camaro columns rather than SII on BP. I don't remember what the purported advantages are anymore but it might be worth looking into. Of all the nitwits over there they swung the ban hammer on him :shaking: so finding his posts might be a bit tricky.
crashhawk 01-30-2010, 05:57 PM Chris, you get the column?
Well shoot, if he hasn't by now, I have a stock 800 or SII column he can have for shipping.
Edit: I mean I have both columns and he can have either. Not that I don't know which I have.:homer:

I never read that, but I never understood banning him. I learned ALOT from him, and he even sent me a 196 powersteering bracket for free, wouldn't even take shipping:smokin: For those who don't know, that's a fairly rare piece.
IIRC SII colums use a GM connector, don't they?
okkool77 01-31-2010, 03:12 PM Yep, they do use the GM style connecter, and the same wire configuration.
ChiScouter 02-03-2010, 05:58 PM I did some looking around over on BP and couldn't find any threads by doug regarding the camaro column so it may have been pre V bulletin. After some more thought I think the advantages of the camaro column were a smaller stock steering wheel and the high beam switch on the column.
chris fresh 02-03-2010, 08:17 PM the column that jet sent me will work fine, everything in the 800 will be mounted in the fiberglass dash.all the column will do is turn the box,i might even shave the key hole with the push button start.i'll keep the turn signal switch tho.looks to be an older model scout 2 column, looks kind of different than my 78 column, but then again i could be wrong.robert will confirm if he see's this post.
JetFxr 02-03-2010, 08:45 PM I've been tripping over it for years in my shop, Chris I know its from a Scout II but I just don't recall the truck it came from. By the way I think I ran up on the key for it if you want them PM me, if not I toss them. Glad it will work for you and it had a funky after market wheel, I jerked it off to make it easier to ship. Oh yes if you want one with out the key switch same deal, just hate to toss it.
justscoutin 02-09-2010, 01:58 PM a J@@p xj column and shaft is pretty much a direct bolt-in also, no shifter on the column, headlight hi/lo on column, and you get the sweet ujoint shaft between column and box. only thing you gotta do is cut the firewall flange off the bottom and it fits in the stock scout wirewall bracket. it plugs into the factory harness also.
