: Spring over or buy straight axles?

Just bought a 24ft flatbed trailer with 4 inch drop axles. This setup is way too low so I wondering if I could do a spring over or should I buy a new set of straight axles. Axles are 3500lb with a slight bend in them.
I searched this topic but only found a thread about flipping axles; not what I want to do.

I have a single axle 14' utility trailer with a 4" drop 3500 lb axle that I spoa'd. Never did take measurements, but it lifted it 3-4". It would be much cheaper than replacing the axles, and I think you would gain the fender clearance that you need.

new straight 5,200 lb axles if that were mine.

Might be the way to go. How much money we talking? Approximately?

I would never bother with 3500lbs axles, and especially on a 24ft trailer. My 20ft weighs 2680, so I am gonna guess you are close to 3000 empty. That only leaves you 4000 for payload. At least with the 5200's it leaves you 7400. It looks like the frame of the trailer is built good well enough to handle more then 7k.

youre prolly not gonna overload 3500 lb axles with your scout,you could SOA it for now to get some clearance,but i agree the 5200 lb are a good investment for a 24 footer.

Why?

Why?

3500lbs = 5 lug
5200lbs = 6 lug
6000lbs = 8 lug...

Thats why.

Meh, if it were mine I'd just do the spring over and be done with it, should be pretty easy and straight foreward with square tube axles. You mgiht have to flip a pin in the springs or drill a new locating hole in the opposite side of the axle tube, but thats not a big deal.

If you think you might want more capacity, keep an eye out for a deal on some different axles while you run around on your current sprung over ones.

I would do the same. Shouldnt take more than a few hourts to do it. If you dont like ti that way after the fact Then you can start throwing money at it. I mean hell its a free mod to SPOA. Give it a whirl.

Well I did the SOA today and it kciked up about 5 Inches. Made all the difference. I'll get new pics up soon.
I would still like to get some 5200 lb axles down the road when the budget allows. Thanks for the input.:beer:

I'm looking to spring over my trailer in the near future, glad to see others are doing it. I want to widen my deck out to the width of the tires and with it sprung over it would have really short drive-over fenders.

Go for it. Only hang up was the spring eye bolt were welded at the nut and threads. It was a bitch loosening cause I didn't see the tack weld until after.

If you're buying new axles anyway, I'd just go with 6k ones to get the 8-lug pattern. Any price difference in the axles would likely be negated by being able to run used take off rims &/or 16" tires.
