It's almost done. I got all the tubing cut and tacked into place. It's my first one and learned a lot. This rig is set up for some of the tuffest obsticle courses in the Usa. The tuffest being the last one. The reason for the changes. I'm working on filler pieces now for over the space where the headlights were. I got one done so far. I have to get back out. Another race in two weeks. Lots more to do. Racing seats, harnesses, All the guages, and 6 bilsteins.

Did you see the title of the post dick. It's an obsticle course rig. Get your shit out and play with the big boys. You have a 90% chance of making it 1 of the 4 laps. Racing not crawling.

Wow, rock crawlers or nothing I guess. Newbies on newbies is funny.

The rig looks heavy to me. Good work on the cage from what I can see but I can't see much.

Shocks below the diff are probably fine for what he needs. Never thought I'd see 4-wheel drive snobs...

i dig it ... not sure why he even has a winch though. how does it fly through the air ? I figure the mongo big rear bump is ballast to keep it from nosing down ??

just for kicks about 6 months ago I went to the monster truck races to watch the tuff trucks run ... it was cool. get me a toyota beater with a rollcage and i'd be out there floggin the crap out of it in a hearbeat.

don't let these guys rag ya ...

heh that kinda looks like fun! a low COG seems to be a definate must, but I'd have to had gotten that truck pretty damn cheap to be slamming it around like that (but hey if I made decent $$$ I'd probably feel differently)

hehe Rednex, I have that CD, it's good "pull up next to a ricer and turn up the stereo" music:D

I guess some of you can't read either. I said earlier that I broke three shocks. (Dah the reason for them hanging down. )They broke athe the axle pearches. This truck is built for one course. It is the tuffest course in the USA. The reason I'm on this board is that many of the setups help me in my racing setup. The truck was in pretty good shape when I got it. I'm the third owner. It was strret legal til the last race.I will be building a crawler next. I'm looking for another Toyota To put my Jimmy body on that you see in the background in the one pic. And as far as newbie goes. I was probably wheelin while most of you were in diapers. Also look at when I joined. And I have the star. So fuwk off! So I don't post much! I never post much because of the rig not being a crawler. I don't have to ask questions because I SEARCH
The back bumper is for weight balance. The front one is for trees. It svaed me more than once.I have weights that I slide in the tube as needed for each track. The winch is actually just to get it on the trailer. But I have used it. Just to give you an idea how ruff this kind of raacing is. The last race 153 rigs started and only 73 finishes all 4 laps.
I am not good friends with Bob but we talk via email a lot. He has raced the 7 miler and wants to build a rig too.

The video looks like one of our short courses. It is much like our 7 miler except for bigger mud holes, more rocks, and much bigger hill climbs here. But that is almost like the short ones. The format for that here is we start two trucks one going each direction and the winner moves on.

Cage looks good, but I would cross brace the main hoop in an X pattern and make shoulder harness attachment points to it as well.. Not sure what you have in the door frames but I would for sure connect the front hoop to the rear hoop... Since it looks like punching through the body isn't a problem.

Are those the preferred tires ? I think I would run more of an AT tread pattern

papee
10-05-2002, 10:30 AM
Itsa, Your right. I am waiting for my harnesses to come now. I'm waiting til they come to put the x braces in. The side bars are mandatory too. I'm making removable ones. I still have the doors so they say they are not needed but I have most of the metal out of them so to be safe I'm putting them in.
The tires are for rolling it around and playing. I have three sets. A pair of 33", yes I said 33' (boggers)for the correct gearing for the 7 miler. And a set for the sand drags, They're 33's for the back and 31's for the front. The one's for the front are sand tires. Like the one mounted for the spare.

Just a bit more info on the type of race. The average speeds of the better rigs are from 16-18 mph. It's pretty rough. The object of my game is to go as fast as possible knowing the limits of the truckbut makeing all 4 laps. Making all the laps is sure to get towards the top, especially in the 4cyl class. They pay out to 1/3 of your class. The overall winner took home $3200.
Scoring and times here (http://www.eventscoring.com)Under Line Moumtain 4 wheelers 7 miler There's some pics too.

Ok,is all the busting on my rig done? I'm sure it's not but I have more. For those who are busting, let's see your rig in action. Anyway, I got the cage welded and the roof metal on. Also the headlight fillers. No parts today. Man where are they? We're racing in two weeks! BTW the truck will be painted and relettered for next year, thanks to our local Toyota dealer.

Always wear your helmet! This is no time that the passenger has his hands off of it. Whens the last time someone broke their face on the steering wheel? It's happend but not too often. All the stuff on my rig is race proven. Not just made up. Remember this is a racing rig only>besides, with a 5 point on you'd never get close.

looks good! I like the roof! the handle bars are fine as long as the passenger is buckled up!

No DOwn bars Roxie but I will be putting in the corner braces. The roof is removable. A convertable so to speak.

Rocksie
10-05-2002, 05:14 PM
cool...

But why convertable....Please explain...

EDIT: Nevermind....I see in the pix that you have the metal overhead that is removable....Not sure what this has to do with structure tho.

At any rate have a great time....

The reason for the rmovable top is mainly driver comfort. You need all the air you can get. The way I explain the demand it has on a driver to friends is , Try to pull two ropes one in each hand, for 3 1/2 hours. Just holding on to the wheel is the worst. The heat is just tolerable. It is hard to imagine the exertion. Espesially for this old boy. I do train in the racing season, weights mostly. For the arms. My codriver had no gloves on this year and came out with bloody hands. I like the use of the Duct Tape in that last picture :D Duct tape will fix anything... including death wobble and a d35c:flipoff2:

papee

LOL That's a fix from the street days. I knew someone would see it. I had a body lift on it then and was losing heat. Can't a guy get a break. A couple piece of tape. Ok, I'll get rid of it tommorrow. I kinda liked it but if it must go.

The headlight covers REALLY help make it look better. I also like the top. I pulled my earlier post as I was out of line, thinking this was going in the "What do you think of my truck" direction. As far as "...been wheeling since you were in diapers" you were wheelin WHAT in 1962??? only a M Jeep or a Binder I bet!:p

I can take the busts on my truck or I would'nt be here. You have to defend yourself or you leave yourself open for more. Well, more than the usual. I was wheelin with my dad at the age of ten. That's 37 years of wheelin. My wife likes it, that makes it even better. Heck it was her idea to "go for it" taking the truck off the street and making it a full race setup. She looks in the adds every day for another Toy so we can start the crawler project. I have a lead on one now. I'm probably going to start it over the winter.

I finaly watched that video ... Looks like a blast... are the longer races set up the same or are they higher speed races with biggger air and berms?

I played at locall rally before and had a blast but this looks allot more fun..and expensive on breakage...

The 7 miler I just ran is four laps around the course. The course is mostly rocks. there are trails but rocks everywhere. The trees are tight in some spots. I saw more than a few with the skin off. I got two myself. There is a couple hill climbs, one is a two part. You go up the first part( this is where the pic above was taken) the a sharp left to the second part. You get three chances to make it up. If you don't make it they send you around it a add 10 minutes to your lap time. You have 1 hr to complete a lap. If you do not make the hour cut off you are out. Oh, they start you a minute apart. 125 to 150 rigs. If you come up on someone you blow you horn and they have to move over for you asap. The trails are tight so pulling off is not easy. If you do not yield to the faster rig (NUDGING IS ALLOWED)!
They have classes.stock buggy, modified buggy,4cyl 4x4, 6 cyl 4x4,8 cyl 4x4 and long wheelbase. Engine mods are ok. This course is VERY rough. A semi stock rig will not make it. I broke three shocks at the axle perches and the front tower gave under the stress and punched a hole in the inner fender wall. I would also recomend traing before a race. Your arms turn to butter after less than a full lap. There are some field crossing that I hit around 70 mph but they are short and few. The picture of me on the hill climb does not show a buggy that is broke at the top. By the time the front end came down and I saw him I was within a couple feet of him. It messed me up some for the second part but I made it. WWWWeeeeW That is all

Where, in Harrisburg, is the toughest obstacle course in the USA?

Is your "7 miler" really 7 miles?

On average, how many rigs finish, vs. the number that break or roll-over?

Our last race we had 6 rigs racing at once, side by side.

Before the first lap, one rig had already rolled. Halfway through, two rigs had rolled.

Couple hits here n' there, a few overheats, a blown motor.. there was only one rig left running at the end of the 1/2 hour. :D

And that was one of our shorter/tamer courses. :flipoff2:

BTW, I don't know anyone that runs with a winch in our races.. sure, most of the trailers have winches, and our trail rigs have winches, but never on the race rig - all that weight hanging off the front just helps us flop 'em end-over-end easier..

On the shock mounts tearing apart.. your shocks are either too long, too short.

I kept breaking my shock mounts until I put some longer travel units in and adjusted my mounts for a third time and finally it seems they stay together.

If they don't, I'll have to go for the limiting strap. :)

The 7 miler is 7 miles long. 4 laps around a 1 3/4 mile course. It is held in Dornsife, Pa.

An average of around 26% finish the race. This year out of 123 trucks only 32 finished.

We run all rigs at once, starting 1 minute apart.

My shocks were too short. I putting on Bilsteins with 12" of travel.
two at the front corners and one on the back.

I'm not bragging about how rough the course is. That is the way the race is billed. "The toughest 7 mile course in the USA."
I am updating my site and there will be photos there.

If you look close at the winch it is a small one. Not much weight there. I have it on the rig because it is a lot easier for me to load. The controls are on the dash. Much easier that the two man job it takes to use one on a trailer.

SHAWeet, That looks fun. The corse has a nice flow to it, you go to fast or too slow and its gonna hurt.
