I have a 1996 Ford Bronco with pushbutton 4x4.
As I said I have a clunk coming from the right axle when I turn the steering wheel. I had mechanics test drive it, the clunk/pop doesn't occur when they drive it.

When I rotate the driveshaft the left axleshaft does not turn.
When both hubs are locked, driveshaft is locked.
When left hub is unlocked, right is locked, driveshaft turns, left axleshaft turns.

If it is the 4x4 engaging Id just buy a manual t-case

It sounds to me like the c-clip is bent, and is allowing undue movement in the axleshaft. Its then smacking agenst the knuckle and or hub.

Umm, sounds like a perfectly normal open front diff to me.

That could be it, I will have to check that out soon.

Hey MWellner,

Depending on what kind of clunking noise it is, this could be it too:
Try grabbing the axle shaft itself. It will move freely in and out of the pumpkin about 1/8 - 1/4". If you push it in hard enough, you will hear it "clunk". This is normal, and nothing to worry about.

I went through the same thing (hearing the clunking noise), and just crawled under the truck one day and found this situation. I asked a few others if theirs was the same, and it was.

Just a thought.
