I was on my way home from school...going 60 mph on the interstate mind you...when my right rear axle bearing gives and the tire, shaft and drum pass me! So I'm considering a full float setup for the rear as this happened to the other side last year. I had checked both bearings after that happened but I guess things happen. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/crybaby2.gif" border="0">

I ALMOST did that.. but I noticed the Scout handling a little funny and stopped and felt the wheel bearings.. and quickly found the one that was HOT HOT HOT.

I now check my wheel bearings at every fuel stop on a trip just to make sure.

Yep! I was goin downhill, almost to the Forresthill divide bridge when mine past me up. Luckily, the assembly stopped short of goin over into the canyon. PITA, but fixable. Has'nt happened since then in any of the scouts that I've owned. However, I've learned to do a lot of preventative maintenance since then. Ya know, I was on my way home from school too.....

Had that happen to me. I was headed to my buddy's house after I got the new BFGs put on. Was going down a windy 2 lane road when the axle shaft, wheel, tire and all that good stuff passed me by. Everyone said I should have rolled my truck, but I just calmly placed on the side of the road. Had to have the highway shut down to one lane as the tow truck whiched my scout onto the flatbed.

Only thing I have lost coming home from school was the driveshaft when the nut that holds the yoke on to the rear output yokle of the xcase came off. Not fun either.

I had that happen once. Pretty scary when you give it some gas and all that you get in return is some bad sounds coming from underneath. I thought something really serious had broken.

Luckily, the e-brake cables caught my rear shaft, keeping it off the ground, and I actually found the nut on the side of the highway. It was pretty chewed up, but I figured that just made it a better lock nut! I was going to replace it with a new nut, but it's working too good to mess with. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Yeah I feel pretty lucky. Especially since just as the wheel came off it rolled up a wall on the interstate, bounced back at me and off of my bikini top! <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> Then it went across the oncoming traffic and landed in a construction zone. I'm just glad noone else was hurt.

Alright, I got the Scout back on the road today. I did a rear brake job and got a new axle shaft with bearing and another backing plate. Fortunately thats all the damage that was done!

I bet you check them more often now <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I had this happen to me just a couple of months ago. That is why I did the full width swap (FF14 bolt). The thing is that if the housing is bent at all it WILL happen again. It loads up the bearing incorrectly and the spit out is the result no matter how much you maintain them. So, I suggest you check your rear to see if there are any bends in them and think seriously about going FF.
