How do you go about doing this? I need 24v to use it on an 81 Toy BJ-42 ( diesel cruser) Does anyone know how to do this? I really would like to do it my self to save money. I am also open to options for using some kind of regulator so i can run it as 12v in the 24v system.

what if you just hooked your winch up to the first battery in series?

The theory is simple, but executing it may not be: You need twice as many turns of wire for 24V vs 12V with wire that is half the cross section area of the wire used for 12V. This would be for both the armature and the stator (unless the motor is permanent magnet type stator).

Yes, buy a 24V motor for your winch..
Ok that was not a lot of help.. But thought you may not have known that the top three Winch OEMs makes there most popular winches in both 12 & 24v
Maybe call a local Alt/Starter rebuild shop and ask. Winch motor is just a purpose built, very heavy duty starter type motor.
Edit: PN 8803 is the 24V motor part number
PN 7536 is for the 12V

I've seen a few people with the opposite problem, got 24V winch, only have 12V system. I'd post a few want ads and see if anyone wants to trade.

You will need a new motor and solenoids for that to work properly. They are readily available from most Warn dealers.
