lug pattern on a xj, 5x4.5 or? got a 96 xj axle wanting to buy its a non-disconnect for sure? do I need to worry about ABS or not? My 98 wrangler shafts will swap in along with all the brake stuff for sure? Steering off the wrangler will bolt right to the XJ hp30? I can take the yolk off the 98 lp30 and put on the hp30 and vise versa?? Are they the same width?

In a hurry will buy today

yeah, Im running an HP30 in a TJ. it bolts in, no problemo.

shafts, brakes, steering are cross-compatible

edit, but if your TJ is abs and the XJ wasnt, you will not have the tonerings on that axle, but I believe you can simply move the sensors onto that HP30 and put your shafts/unit bearings in and it would probably work the same again. I forget how that was all laid out when I ripped my LP30 out...

edit 2: I *think* the tonerings for the abs system are on the axle shafts, inside the unit bearings

is it non-disconnect on the 96 then?

no ABS on the TJ so the XJ doesnt have ABS then or can get either in the XJ what do I look for on the housing to tell if its an ABS axle on the XJ?

if you don't NEED ABS, any axle will work. If you NEED ABS, get an ABS axle. And to tell, you look at the knuckles and see if there's a steel strap bracket with a speed sensor, and a ribbed tone ring on the outer axle shaft. It's not part of the unit bearings, it's actually friction welded to the axleshaft and you can see them from the back side of the knuckle. Your shafts should work just fine with the HP30 housing. In fact, you might want to swap the shafts, bearings and brake rotors over as well, because there were some differences with the brake rotor hat height and the unit bearing dimensions that make them non-mixable. As long as you keep all of your outer stuff together, it should work.

just talked to the jeep dealer and they said the XJ is the cherokee and the ZJ is the grand cherokee and they seem to think that neither would bolt directly into the 98 wrangler. When I found this axle its actually off a grand cherokee in 96 (ZJ) so do I really need to look for one off a cherokee (XJ) and not a grand??

They'll both bolt directly in, but the grand cherokee didn't have the HP30, and all grands have CV axles instead of regular ujoint axles. You'll have to look for an XJ if you want the High pinion and interchangable parts.

ah cool thanx for the info... what specific year is best, hear the 96-98 have the bigger joints? The junk yard Im looking says ujoint so does that mean its probably a xj HP30 and they botched up calling it a grand cherokee? heres there list:

1996
Front Axle Assy.
Jeep Grand Cherokee U-JNT TYPE AXL SHFT,3.73 RATIO

they are getting a pic of it tomorrow... of course its 3hr drive there for it...http://www.fordification.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_steering.gif

Go put eyes on the piece you're looking at buying....see if it's a disconnect, ABS, or CV shaft axle.
