Hey guys,

I'm planning on purchasing a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel from Oregon and bringing it back to CA and registering it.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do specifically to get it kosher for Cali?

I know I need a title, registration, VIN verification.

Do I need a smog? According to the FAQ on the DMV website, it states diesels are exempt. Can I get the VIN verified thru CHP? Do they have forms, or do I need to get them from DMV? Am I exempt from the vehicle weight?

Does anyone know how to ensure it is a 49 state legal vehicle?

Also, specifically in regard to the truck I am looking at.

It is a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 QuadCab with the 6 speed. Is there anything I need to look at specifically when I get there. The dealer states that there is one open recall that still needs to be addressed. Does anyone know what it might be?

Thanks again guys.

DO NOT go to the CHP for a VIN verification. They will go over it with a fine toothed comb and find some wat to throw a wrench in your works. Just Get the forms and swing by your local PD and see if they can have an officer come out and do it for you, you may need an appointment. I think you'll need a smog since they say title transfers need it done right now for sure. If you're coming from Oregon, swing in and see Smogman on your way home if possible. He's been very helpful in other threads and would probably appreciate the business.

I bought my truck in Arizona... You'll need to get a weight cert, but no smog for the diesel, yet. Smogman will be able to answer that question. I use AAA instead of dealing with lines at the DMV. They did the VIN check. Bring lots of $$$. With registration, weight fees, and whatever they charge for the out of state vehicle, I had to pay over $700 on an $8700 truck.

Apparently I do need to get smogged because of transfer of title. Does anyone know where to get a weight? Does it need to be printed on a specific form, or can I go to a weigh station (thru CHP) and just get a print-off from them?

It needs to be a certified scale. I went to the local recycling center.
