How much weight can the windshield frame bear without having adverse consequences? I want to build an overhead rack and tie it into my light rack which is bolted to the windshield frame.

I think the better question is "How top heavy can I build my rig before it topples over on a speed bump?"

Well, consider that my windshield has broken itself and I don't have any extra weight on the top of the windshield frame.. it just flexes enough as it is.

It WAS a brand new windshield, too..

Removable rack, ya big lummox. <g> For when I take my boy scouts out camping. I need a place to hang all the backpacks. 2 scout leaders, and 3 scouts makes for a lot of backpacks, plus my recovery equipment, spart parts and tools.

So, I am considering building a 3' wide rack that goes straight down the middle of the truck. It will rest on the roll bar, on a brace in the rear, and I have been considering resting it on the light bar.

But, sounds like resting it on the light bar is not a good idea.

Hmm, guess I better buy that front roll hoop. Then, I can just rest it on there.

OK Then!! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> Get the front hoop, sounds like a much stronger setup, and you neet it anyway!

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Birthday is at the end of the month. Guess I will buy a hoop for my birthday present.

Better go shopping. I'd rather find a bargain than pay off the shelf prices though. Saw a few hoops at roundup, but didn't have cash at the time. Guess I will drop a note on nwb list and see what pops.

So, 2 inch pipe with .120 wall?

Yeah, good answer. Ben was confusing the IH board for JU. :P He's just jealous cuz he finally has more dented body panels than me after his last trip up the crack. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

No. 2" .120 wall tubing.

I bent my tube with a pipe bender. It doesn't look perfect but it works. If you could find someone local with a tube bender it would take them all of 20 minutes to make a front hoop. Then you just weld it in and add some spreaders and you are done.

Maybe OldScout'll chime in with cage materials n' such..

My neighbor builds buggies out of 1.5" tubing and says he's getting it for $1/ft locally. I know I got a puzzled look when I asked for "2 inch .120 DOM" a while back.. then they did some lookin' and said, "$5.61 a foot in 20-24' sticks"

Didn't even include the Vaseline.

I'm hoping some 1.75 .120 tubing can be had for $3/ft or less.

I'll need to find out before I order the JD2. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0">

At $5.61/ft it would be cheaper to farm it out to Art Morrison.. they bend, notch, and ship for less than I can get the materials.. but I haven't checked on varieties of 1.75" HREW yet..

15' for the main hoop, 15' for the front hoop, 10' for the stringers front/back.. 5' for a back-bar, 5' for a dash bar, then the seat mounts, rear kickers... *sigh*

Give SC&N Fab a call, Pat.

For minimal bends, have 'em make a front hoop. Two bends at the top to make the "U", then a bend at the bottom of the windshield/top of the firewall to match the windshield slope. 4 bends total.

Then straight tube notched for the stringers.

I was lookin in my pickup.. I think two bends in a front hoop can be made to work w/o bending down at the windshield..

You should be able to find the tube cheaper than that. You don't need DOM, plain 'ol HREW will be fine.

See, that is how things start. I start out wanting a rack to hang boy scout back packs on, and now I am working on a full cage. Am I the only one around here who is poor?????

On the other hand, my bikini top will work better with a full front cage <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Poor? I'm still trying to figure out what you do with all of that Seattle $$$$ cash if you're not spending it all on your truck like the rest of us! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Y'know, you could do like Scoutillac and send the little woman off to work to finance your toys. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I started off wanting something to play with.. and look where I ended up. Heck, the damn things have reproduced to the point I had to give some away.. to the point where we could get home-owners insurance b/c of too many Scouts.. or the 2nd mortgage for the garage b/c of too many Scouts.. (AFTER I cleaned up for the insurance people..)

Actually, Kai got the car used, from his brothers <g>

Yep. The big VS. That is why I had to get the big V. Course, the big V did not work, but the big VS still does. But then, the IUD did not work either. So, the V and IUD failed, but the VS works fine. Go figure.

Hooper,

I am not sure who currently has the 2BB bender. Could be in the Northend still or maybe even Olympia. We do have dies for 1.5" and 2".Maybe we can get together sometime this weekend and talk a little IH. J has got so many ideas in my head - i think if we put everything together I would have one Hot <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0"> truck. This all started out as a simple project of let's make a cheap trail rig. I now have over $300 bucks into the project. How much more will I have to spend to make my truck run? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> Actually, I do have a little over $300 into it, mostly license, tabs, and a gasket kit. Plus lots of cleaner and paint. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> See ya this weekend.

I won't be in my truck. Too far for me to drive it. Have not had it on a long shakedown cruise like that, and I don't want to take a chance getting delayed and messing up Rick's day. So, I will be in a saturn, but I will be hanging around Rick's rig all day I guess.

Cool, looks like quite a few scout guys going to be there. We should be able to get everyone together.

Neckster thinks Caine has a used cage he might want to off load. I am buying a rear swing away carrier from him anyway, so, I have to be up there to take a look anyway. I dropped a line to Caine. See how much he wants for the cage.
