jdjanda 10-25-2001, 11:33 PM What other rigs have you owned and wheeled? How did the others compare to the IH of your choice. Why do the Heep guys look at us like we're nuts?
Personally I've owned a 79 CJ-5, and a 90 Bronco. Wife has a 00 Expo.
I owned the CJ when I was young and dumb. Didn't know my a-hole from a hole in the ground. The CJ-5 was fun to play with in the mud, had a nicely built engine, and was a chick magnet. The down side was the lack of room, weak AMC 20, and weak tranny. I blow the T-150 twice, one time it was second and the cluster, the other were snycros. The rear end let go on the way back from Palm Springs and almost set the entire Heep on fire. I hated climbing with the 5, the Scout's 100"s is nice when climbing, but a pain to squeeze through spots.
I wheeled the Bronco once mostly on fire trails. It was a daily and not a trail toy. Lately I've been considering adding one to the collection, and save the Scout for trail duty. The Expo is the wife's and is only 4wd for the trips to the snow. Although I have sized up the swampers next to her rig.

Overkiller 10-26-2001, 12:54 AM I've owned a lot of different junk and pretty much settled on the IHs until I build a buggy. I've had fullsized Chevys but they were both pieces of crap, a few Jeeps which were nice but too expensive to build up. Everyone is looking for the same rare factory parts to make them wheelable. Try pricing a Jeep granny T18 and a Scout wide T19. The Jeeps are about 3 times as much and a bitch to find. I also have trouble fitting into CJ5s since I'm 6' 4". I've also owned several Toyotas and next to Scout 800s they are my favorites. Really easy to build and cheap except for getting them to crawl. The fridge style Scouts are the winners for me though. You can buy them for next to free, find choice IH parts for dirt cheap, they fit the whole famn damily, and full width axles fall right underneath them. My favorite part has to be their completely flat bellies though. No transfer cases hanging down grabbing rocks like Jeeps and Toyotas. That's my take on it.

Scout Dude 10-26-2001, 05:54 AM I have owned a total of 4 four wheel drives. My first was a 90 nissan pu. It was a clean ride. I put a trailmaster 4' kit on it and destroyed the ride of it. If i had it to do over again, I would have do a SAS. Here is her with the lift and 32" tires (that's all I could fit due to back-spacing clearance....stupid lift company )

Next, I actually bought my Scout so I could wheel it and not have to worry about scratching it. I was actually looking for an EB but this Scout was a whole lot cheaper. Since I have owned it, I am sold. I wouldn't want anything else. Here's what is looked like when I got it.

While buiding my Scout, I sold the Nissan and bought an '86 Toy extra cab. This thing had every option that they had back then. It was also my first car with AC I was getting closer to having the Scout drivable again so I sold the Toy for fear that I would (seriously) wheel it and would fawk it up.

And finally I bought a '92 4-runner. This thing is a POS. It must weigh 6 tons and the v-6 has less power than the other Toy's 4-cyl. Although, I only bought it for a daily driver and I got it from my brother real cheap so I have little to complain about. I'm not going to disgrace this hardcore site with a pic of it cause it's ugly and very stock. I think that I have done enough by showing a Nissan on it.

Zane Znamenacek 10-26-2001, 07:03 AM I own a 99 TJ, errr, actually my wife has a 99 TJ. But I've wheeled it a lot. As far as manueverability, clearance and flex (at least with her lift), the TJ wins hands down. As far as powering up a steep, loose hill, I'll take the Scout. On most CO trails, I think the TJ is easier to drive, in Moab, where wheelbase and front-end weight rule, I'd give a slight edge to the Scout. It just depends.
There's definatly pluses and minuses to both of them. The TJ is really easy to work on too, there's no rust on any of the bolts and any part you can imagine is available as a bolt on. As you know, it takes a full shop to build a Scout because everything has to be hand fabbed.
Biggest difference of all; I have about $9,000 in my Scout and it's paid for. In the TJ, probably closer to $30,000, and I still owe about $8,000 of that to the bank. (Hey, I know $30,000 seems like a lot to have tied up in a friggin' Heep, but if it got your wife out on the trail and got her into 4-wheeling as much as you are, you'd be happy to pay that much too!)
For my next rig, I'm building a '71 800. I'm hopeing it will be the ultimate combination of room (like in my SII), power (like my fathers Early Bronco w/351W), and manueverability (like the wife's TJ).

Cliffy [JD] 10-26-2001, 07:49 AM This scout is only me second 4wd. My first was my blazer which you can read about at the link below.
When I went to go buy my blazer I stopped at a place that had a scout II for sale and I was gonna buy it except the guy didn't have the title on hand so I carried through with the blazer (hind sight is 20/20)
So here I am now back at square one with a 78 Scout II totally stock. And soooo ready to be lifted and whatnot........
As far as how they compared I can't really say when the blazer was stock it wheeled pretty well I thought, but then I spent so much time building the coil spring suspension on it that I haven't wheeled it since I started the conversion. And now I have my scout and haven't wheeled it yet either but I expect it to kick ass at least as much as the blazer if not better.
I'm looking forward to finding out how well the scout wheels next summer.

johnnyx 10-26-2001, 08:19 AM hmmm... stock '76 IH Scout II when I was in high school (11 or 12 yrs ago),
an '83 2wd Ranger (sucked), '84 4x4 Bronco II - didn't suck quite as bad,
'89 4x4 Nissan PU - better,
92 Pathy SE - nice, but didn't offroad too well - mostly stock though,
'00 Xterra, mild lift, better tires, removed rear swaybar - believe it or not, it does really well. Here's the Xterra in Moab:

About 3 months ago, picked up the IH and love it: '77, SOA, 33's - big pic, so here's the link http://www.4wdxterra.com/scout/newtop.jpg

I think it's all do-able. The 800s seem to have less interior room than a II, but probably more than a CJ (how could you get LESS?)
My built 345 keeps up with my friend's 351W powered EB just fine. He still has an edge with his 4bbl and complete lack of self concern.
One of these days I'll get back to ProJectioning my rig..

In HS I "wheeled" my 2wd Chevy Luv! Not much true wheelin'.. but "back up and hit it harder" became a favorite saying.

I have no idea why the truck still runs and drives.. but I *do* know why I had to rebuild the front suspension every year.
I did try to roll it down a 10' drop off once.. hit a big mud puddle at high speed.. then realized it had an edge to it.. got the Luv sidways and off we went.. closest I've been to flopping a rig. Only bent the A-arm, Spindle, and a few other things...
Had more fun busting snow banks n' such in my friend's '72 Scout II..
A year after HS his folks gave him the choice of the Scout II, or the Subaru AWD wagon.. he claims he was being mature and responsible when he took the Subaru (which died two years later).
I think he was being stupid. I bought the Scout. That was the beginning of the end..
Not much true wheelin' in it for me.. I only drove it about 9 months, and it's been parked since then (and part of that time tied up in litigation with a currupt body man that was supposed to replace the body mounts..).
I got it good n' stuck once.. $200 wrecker bill. D'oh.
After 9 months, Midas said I needed to invest $1000 into the drum D30/D44 setup..
I parked it. I bought a '77 - "Tigger" sight unseen out of Billings, MT for $700 - with new disc brakes up front, new Track-lok in the back, 4.09s, power steering, p/b.. all the goodies my '72 lacked.
Except it came with a 196!
I've done most of my wheelin' in the '77. - local trails, not-so-local trails, Holy Cross, Moab..
I've also taken my '72 Travelall wheelin' - not too shabby. Great to be able to haul all the food for the tree-run, and ALWAYS warm (unlike the rag-top SII).. not to mention it's a lot easier to carry a few extra bruisers for shovel duty.

Looking at my service manual, I always thought I could convert my 2wd to 4x4 with bolt-ons.. and while getting a steering column for my T'all last weekend, I caught myself looking over a few 4x4 Luvs in the wreckin' yard..
I have a friend that had (or still has?) an SAS Luv!
They started making 4x4 IFS Luvs in '78. His was a '77 "Crown Industries" conversion. Solid axle/leaf sprung Dana 30 front, a divorce mounted Dana 20, and the stock (4.56 in most of 'em) Luv rear axle SOA.
He had some phat 27" Coopers on it.
Pretty low-tech setup.. torch off the IFS stuff, hang some springs, get a CJ D30..
I thought about it for a while, until I found the $475 "divorce Dana 20" kit at AA.. ouch.

Some say "too many"!
Mostly complete/nearly running? A '72, '74, '77, '77, '79. '72 T'all, '74 200. Plus parts trucks - '77 Traveler (now a trailer), '75 SII, '76 SII, and '68 800.
Cut up a '72 and '78.
The '74 was $200 and runs - but won't go backwards. It's the truck on the trailer behind my T'all in the thread from yesterday. I'm giving it to my mom after I put the guts from my broken-cased 727 into the no-reverse 727. She's wanted a Scout ever since she found out the tops came off.
tsm1mt 10-26-2001, 09:51 AM On the subject of Luvs..
I forgot to add that a friend (and one time SII owner) RACES a Chevy Luv.
Then again, it's a Luv frame and body.. with a ntiroused 350V8 (or is it a 400?). Front is coils and radius arms with a Chevy '44 front with F150 hubs/rotors on it, rear is a 9", also coiled..
Actually a pretty capable race rig when it holds together.. blew chunks out of the motor a year or so ago, then lost a rear coil during one race, etc.
I have video of it on my site..

76 Chevy Luv- go I loved that thing!! Light, lotsa power, would skim right over the mud holes that get fullsizes stuck.
64 Chevy 1/2 ton. No wheeling. Still a nice truck. 292/4 speed 4.56s
84 BroncII- not sure if I liked it or not.
Had it 6 weeks and little sister put it greasy side up.
87 Ranger. Tuned up 2.8 v-6. Going to be my street racer when I get the 302
61 IH scout. A Goat!! Climbs over anything you want it to. Completly stock, it beats on a built YJ.

ONly 4wd anyone in my family has ever owned is this 1977 IH SSII. Parents bought it new off the lot, after the movie studio finished filming, then I stole it from them about 10 years ago.

Old Scout 10-26-2001, 10:41 AM My first 4x4 was a 78 SII and then I sold it and got a 73 K5 Blazer. I hated the thing and then had a few S-10 Blazers and then had two Cherokees, moved on to a Explorer. I then bought a few scouts as a project. The Explorer blew up and I bought a Land Rover Discovery. So it's down to 2 1/2 Scouts and one disco

I got into this because of her...
one day, last year, I come home and she announces she want to rock crawl. I'm thinking of hanging off the side of a mountain by a thread. She explained and I thought, COOL!
She wanted a Jeep (had to have an auto) and we went out to test drive some. Did not like them, could not get out of it's own way. Found a STOCK 1982 full size Bronco. Was wheeling within a week.

Hayraker 10-26-2001, 02:05 PM Lets see, during high school I would wheel whatever I happened to be driving when the urge hit me to hit the mud-holes:
My mom's Ford LTD
My old 67 chevy stepside
several old 1 ton flatbed's of my dad's
Stepped up to my first 4x4 after I crashed the stepside;
82 Chevy 1500 LWB (it sucked, 305v8)
84 GMC 3500 single wheel, built 454, 4speed, d60&14bolt, 4.56 gears, ABSOLUTELY THE BEST TRUCK I HAVE EVER OWNED AND I OUGHT TO HAVE MY ASS KICKED FOR EVER SELLING IT
01 cummins 2500, auto, d60&d70, 4.11 gears, second best truck I have ever owned, but it doesn't get much wheelin duty, I got it 4wd for feeding and checkin cows, and so I could back my 32'cattle trailer up to a muddy chute.
And now I have the scout which is the first motorized TOY I have owned since 1982 when I was in fifth grade and blew the engine in my KX 80 dirtbike. Never bought a 3-wheeler, or 4-wheeler, or another motorcycle, etc. but I have really enjoyed having the old IH.

pablo955 10-27-2001, 01:36 PM Does my Infiniti G20 count? I drove it through a large puddle the other day - that's about the extent of wheeling it sees. Although, I busted off some unneccesary plastic piece driving around in the feilds at the National IH show this year. Trail Carnage!!
As far as 4x4, the only thing I have ever wheeled is the Scout I have now - 77' Scout II. We certainly have Scouts on the brain in my family though - my dad owns a '79 II, my mom has a 77' Terra, and my little sister will probably get one soon too.
jdjanda 10-27-2001, 10:39 PM Hah, I almost forgot my first ?car? It was a 71 Volkswagon Square Back, think mini station wagon. The back had been cut off, and a rear wall welded in behind the front seats, turning it into a pick-up. I ran 31's on it, and would run on fire roads, and through mud. It was a blast, and it did the best e-brake turns, because all the weight in the arse end.

TERRA-IZER 10-28-2001, 06:43 AM Got my first scout when i was 14 years old (22 now) and still have her, been rolled twice (1 high speed off the highway 60 mph, and once off road in Moab) everytime she makes it home on her own power. Scouts are the only trucks i have really wheeled and liked having, i have a 1976 Terra (my wheeling rig) and 1980 scout diesel (my daily driver 23 MPG), 1966 scout 800 (my next project) and lots of parts trucks, I have owned 26 scouts since i was 14, i'am addicted to them i guess.
Scoutaholic 10-28-2001, 07:15 PM Lets see... I bought my first 4WD right after I got out of the army in 86. 64 1300 long bed with duals. I was the kid with the full size truck stuck on the trails wedged between 2 trees that needed my a** kicked. Abused that truck severely for many years. Just sold that one about 4 years ago and it was still going strong. In 92 I bought a new Jeep YJ. Not a bad little rig. Lifted it a couple inches and put a locker in the rear. Somewhat capable but expensive to even look at. Also too new to realy do my own fab work so it had to go. Somewhere in the middle of this I (we, my ex wife and I)built a 78 full size bronco. Lifted a bunch and had 35's I think. Built 460 and faster than hell. Poser from the word go. It went with the ex wife. Good riddens to both. When I sold the Jeep I bought my scout. Bone stock with 31's. I told myself at that time I was going to use it as a daily driver and not modify it in any way. I got away with that for about 3 years. Since then it's been through a few changes and still changing. I also own a 96 F-250 4wd but that don't count.

So which one cost you more the Bronco or the Ex. Glad to see you made a fresh start with a Scout.

I don't think 30 minutes, a loud pop, and a puff of smoke counts as running.

Well he has seen the light and is building what promises to be one bad ass scout.
But the "tin can" will get him where he wants to go. It is a pretty capable skateboard

Alright now, seems I'm taking a beating here.
It DOES flex, it HAD tires (the 33x12.50 MTs wore out in a year, and the "AT" 33x12.50s on it now had the right price - traded parts - and work better than the bald MTs), and it DOES have lift. A whole 3-4" all around.
I used to disconnect the anti-sway bar when we'd get to the trail (quick disconnect = onboard compressor and 1/2" impact wrench).
I've found that most of the time I just don't need the extra articulation - even in Moab.
If I ever get my new shop done I'll get around to building the new suspension and the new body n' makin' sure the 36" TSLs I bought will fit.
Then again, CRAWLING just isn't as much fun anymore.
I had to make the call this summer - 3 days of slow trail riding, or one day of full throttle madness.
I packed my helmet and neck collar.
