: Bent Warn?
bronco78 10-05-2002, 03:41 PM On my last run, durning a rather hard pull on my HS9500I I started getting a repetitive scraping/grinding sound, It was timed with the movement of the drum.
I finally got the chance to take it down, I found what looks to be a bent drum..

You can see where it is scraping on the drum

and on the housing

SO I guess the question is; has anybody else seen this? I'm thinking maybe cable pile up on that side, plus a max pull could have bent the drum.
Bend it back? or get a new drum?
road1will 10-05-2002, 03:43 PM does the WARN warrenty cover it?

Not sure yet. I've asked a Warn tech to look at the thread,,I'll have to see what he has to say.
P|n-BaLL 10-06-2002, 07:54 AM Heya friend
Actually have seen that before.....was a XDI9000 on a friends EB. I believe in his situation he just clearnced stuff and let it go...(not prolly my first choice) But he got very little help from Warn on the WHY, and what to do about it question arena.

bronco78 10-06-2002, 05:50 PM Well it gets even better....While cleaning the drum today, I noticed it is also bent/dented in the center section, close to the side that is rubbing the housing.
I've never shock loaded this winch, never had any body pull on the cable.. It has only been used as a winch.. I have broken one cable on it, and it's been stalled a few times on the last wrap of cable.. But should that be enough to bend /dent in the center part of the drum?

man that sucks, and its also a reason why i would not own a warn, they bend and get to hot on long hard pulls.

Well gee thanks for the help.
And which exactly is the plasma cooled, mega strength, bombproof winch you have in mind? I've owned several brands, and the Warn line is by far the best out there.
Blackjack 10-06-2002, 10:49 PM Erik, you gone and done it this time. I would have just straightened the flange, but the spool is toast. You'll remember to put a zip tie on the brake when you take it out right ;) ?
I think it is time for a Series 9 for that Bronco of yours. Either that or you are stuck using a snatch block all the time.
Check your PM

Motornoggin 10-06-2002, 11:01 PM This is some Warn carnage.
bronco78 10-11-2002, 06:08 PM Once again, Warn proves to be a leader in the winch game.
Warn is replaceing my trashed spool. I'm picking it up next wed. Not sure if I'll keep this winch or get another,,,but it will be nice to have this one back togeather and useable.

Carnage? What broke? Looks like it was just taken apart.
Blackjack 10-11-2002, 11:47 PM Im telling you Erik, say it with me now
Series 9 Series 9 Series 9.
You will be much happier, unless you plan on puting that Bronco on a serious diet.

it is either a shadow or it looks like the black gear is cracked pretty bad.
bronco78 10-23-2002, 03:14 PM Warn Service replaced my bent spindle and damaged brake assembly... No questions asked...... So while this winch may not have held up as well as I had hoped.. It never stopped working, and was repaired under warrantee.

Dan, I know, I know, I know..LOL
Put my meat grabbers on one today,, and looked at the internals also.. Very beefy.
Still wish I could get a upright style (8274-50) in a 10K plus pull. But until that day..... It's either a M1200 or series 9 or 12
Blackjack 10-24-2002, 12:54 AM The only way you will get an upright in that much pull rating is to build one yourself. I think you will not mind the speed of the series 9 too badly. It is much faster than an m12.
bronco78 10-24-2002, 06:08 AM Line speed is an issue.. I like that of the HS9500 and 8274.. But the bigger issue, is spoolin of the cable under under actual field use.. ie. off angle pulls, . With an 8274 design, you can pile 90+ feet of cable on the outer 1/3 of the spindle..
On the low profile designs,, nothing even close to that is possible.. you end up binding the cable against the mounting surface or the winch it self.
Building a custom mount helps part of the problem, but not enough.

You know you can make a new drum for 8274 that is wider. You know that sometimes 250ft is not long enough :) No I didin't do it but one of the guys in my club has. I cant find a good shot on his page where you can see the drum but look at the extra wide fairley. Here is a link to the picture if it doesn't show.
