: T-19 Close to T-19 Wide
Mechanos 10-26-2001, 10:22 AM Ok, that's right... a newbie. Bring it on!!!!!!!!
Just bought T-19 wide to replace my T-19 close.
http://home.kc.rr.com/torc/scout/P0000264.JPG
The doner for the wide box was an early '70s 3/4 ton IH 4x4. I didn't think to ask whether is was a divorce t-case or not. Now it looks like I have some "guts" transplanting to do to get the wide ratios in my Scout II w/ the D300.
Oh well, at least I didn't get burned on the price.

Newbies aren't allowed to have wide T-19's Yes you are correct what you have is a T19 2wd tranny. The swap requires a lot of work and time, you might as well send me the tranny and forget about it. What D300 do you have is it the Scout D300 with Texas pattern or Heep 300 with round pattern?
Prior to swapping anything, confirm the tranny you bought is a wide. Two ways to do it, shift it in first and turn, mark the rear shaft, you should have to turn the input shaft 6 and 1/3 times for the output to turn once. Second, better method, take the cover off, the input gear (front most gear), should be smaller than the syncro next to it. Once you have confirmed that you have a wide, you need to swap the 4wd mainshaft with the 2wd mainshaft. Search the IH board on how to do this, not trying to be an ass I just don't want to retype it.

That must be why I am having the problems I'm having.
Already confirmed that its a wide. It takes 6+ turns of the input shaft to get one turn of the output shaft while in first gear. I knew not to get the 2wd T-19 from reading other posts and specifically asked it was in a 4wd truck. It was, but what I didn't know was that 3/4 ton IH's (or at least this one) had divorce mount np205 t-case.
Just when I thought I had my bases covered, I get bit in the arse......

Sorry, but technically the seller is correct. I never thought of that as a possibility. It's not that hard to swap the shafts. Just buy a quality snap ring pliers.

Yeah, I don't hold anything against the seller. I was my fault for not asking the "right" questions. Live and learn.
Mechanos 10-26-2001, 06:51 PM Ok, this might be a dumb question, but after reading some other post on this board, it seems that IH also used T-98 with a divorced np-205. How can I tell if what I have is a T-19 or a T-98?
I can't find the article about swapping the mainshafts but I do have the Scout service manual to fall back on. Now is the mainshaft the only one I need to swap? Are the other two shafts set up the same in a wide vs. close box?
jdjanda 10-26-2001, 07:04 PM It's got a reverse light, it should be a T19, the, if you pull the cover and take a pic I can tell you for sure.
Joe
Hate to barge in to your little discussion, but if you want a wide T19 that was mounted to a Dana 20, lemme know. It's disassembled awaiting a rebuild.

Well, thanks for the offer but as I stated above, I just bought one. One T-19 is enough to drain the wallet for awhile. Mine will be mating to a Scout D300, but I believe that is the same as the D20 mounting pattern, isn't it? Can you post a picture of the mounting surface around the output shaft?
makkat 10-26-2001, 08:24 PM The easiest way to tell a T-19 from a T-98 or T-18 is the position of reverse. Reverse on a T-19 is left(?) and down, T-98 and T-18 is right(?) and up.
If the 300 is originally out of a scout it is the texas pattern, while the heep 300 has the round 6 bolt pattern. With it being behind a manual, I would almost garantee it is the texas bolt pattern. There is only 1 company to my knowledge that ever made an adapter for the heep 300 to go behind an IH manual tranny.

Well, I guess that won't be necessary.... amazing what the a screwdriver and little Brake-Cleen can reveal.

It clearly says T19

Overkiller 10-26-2001, 10:19 PM I'm in the exact same boat. I have a 4x4 close T19 and a wide T19 from a 75 IH 3/4 ton 4x4. I don't do gear stuff so I gave the trannies to a buddy for a rebuild. From my research I'd recomend you put the guts into the 4x4 case to save you from having to tap the 3/4 ton case for the 4x4 adapter. Good luck

You make it sound like they're expensive. ?? Sure, they're not like a Ford NP435, but a couple bills for a bulletproof tranny is not a bad deal at all. What did you pay, if you don't mind my asking?
And for anyone really interested, I've got a line on a Scout 300 as well... traded it to a buddy who'd part with it for a reasonable amount.

The IH T19 wides are fairly rare, and the Scout Dana 300's are even more so. Let me know how much you want to part with the both for.

Well, i guess "expensive" is a relative term. In my case, if I had to put the project on hold and put a couple of bills off till next pay check, I consider that "expensive". I paid $300 including shipping for the bastard. I put a "wanted" add on BB and started getting emails left and right. Most everyone wanted $400 to $500 bucks PLUS shipping!!! Then along came this guy and only wanted $300 and he would pay shipping. I thought "what a deal" but I didn't even think about it coming from a truck with a divorced t-case. Oh, well....
Since my Scout is a 1980, I was lucky enough to have the D300 from the factory.
I was thinking 300 as is for the tranny -- disassembled. But make me an offer... it's been in my buddy's garage for close to a year and I could use some cash...
The 300 isn't mine, but I'll see if I can get a price. I'd guess it will be around 500, but not sure.
And I know they're kinda rare... but not nearly as rare as the bellhousing to mate it up to an AMC engine... I've got one for the early I6 as well as the later one. I'd let those go too.
I'm building a Jeep, and was gonna go AMC 360, IH T19, IH Dana 300 with a 44 front. But I got a hella deal on a ford RC 60 front, and didn't want to deal with swapping the front over to a passenger side drop. So, I scrapped the IH route.

Mechanos 10-30-2001, 07:38 PM Anybody know where to get a tranny bearing puller to yank the output and input shaft bearings on a T-19? Found one here (http://www.posilock.com) but it only has a reach of 9.25". The IH T-19 input shaft has a stick-out of 10.5". Can't find one with enough reach.

You could always redrill the T19->D20 adapter for a Bronco '20.. or if you have some wheelbase, a divorced NP205 from a Ford behind a right-drop D20.
Anyone actually want to pay $500 for a wide T19? MARRIED style?
Got one sittin' right here, just taking up space... :P
Naturally, I scored that after I paid $400 at the junkyard for the one in my grey '77 (OK, so for $400 I took the entire Scout it was in..)
jdjanda 10-30-2001, 08:16 PM Here try this puller

I figure any puller that needs it own cart ought to get the job done.
