Well I pulled a T 98 out of a IH 1210. I'd like to modify it to hang a TC on the back or maybe use the low gear(s) in a T 18 case and use it in a Scout II. Is this a no brainer or did I just pick up a spare T 98 for my 1210??

Novak, and Advance Adapters both sell T-case adapters for the T98. The kits both require the main shaft to be replaced. I have a T98, that I may use for an Auto swap.

Q: How long is the input shaft on that T98. I'm looking for a long one.

duh. Looks like my T98 is really a T18. It has T98 cast into the top but the metal tag says T18, and now that I've scraped off more of the crud. It has T18 stamped on the nose. I have an adapter from a close ratio T18 out of a 4x4 Scout II. Looks like it will bolt right on. Then I guess I have to swap main out put shafts, so I end up with a gear instead of a yoke in the right place to mate with the transfer case. It it just that easy??

Basically, couple of points.
1. Buy a good set of snap ring pliers, heavy duty, with a large opening distance. Some of the snap rings on tranny are large, and require a lot of force to spread. I'm not talking about the ones with the little points, good auto stores should have them. I bent an offset in the handles to allow the pliers to open a little further.
2. If you use the 2wd case, you can drill and tap the holes for the t-case adapter, and you don't need to remove the cluster gear, a PIA, because there are four sets of bearings. If you use to 4wd case you will need to swap cluster gears, find the correct size dowel to hold the rollers in place when you reinstall the cluster. Also place the cluster shaft in the freezer the night before you install, it should slide in a little easier. Also if you R&R the cluster, replace the thrust washers for the cluster.
3. Use assembly lube to hold everything together, works a little better than black grease. Search here or the BB, the new gear lubes have an additive that eat the syncros.
GL and let me know if you run into problems.
