: super 60 and sterling 10.5
spyder6 02-03-2010, 12:12 PM Hey guys!
im new here, been doing some reading in between here and jeepforum but im trying to get some info for a 1 ton swap. i did a search through the forum but i didnt come up with what i was looking for.
im trying to find as much info as possible about swapping in late model (99+) ford dana 60 fronts and ford 10.5" axles. any build threads, info on lockers, ring sets, chromoly shafts (even possible for a 10.5?) and andy special info that would be useful about these axles. for example, i heard something on the 2005+ later dana 60's are considered super 60's and come with 35 spline shafts, a 10" ring gear and thick 3" tubes from the factory but you can only get the special ring sets from ford racing.
thanks guys!
Will
bigreen 02-03-2010, 12:39 PM The 05+ did come with 35spline outers, is about 2.5" wider, and has an improved unit bearing design. However, the ring and pinion is exactly the same as the 99-04 D60s.
I have done numerous gear swaps on 99-08, and there is nothing different in the fronts (comparing the two D60 styles). In the rear, in 08+ they have an extra shim behind the pinion head.
spyder6 02-03-2010, 12:45 PM i know on the 05+ they have the huge radius arm bracket on the driver side. is it worth getting the newer axles for the effort of cutting that thing out?
i know there are dana 50's hidden in super duties and they look identical almost to dana 60's, along with the fact that the sterling 10.25 and the 10.5 is basically the same axle from the outside.
are there specific ways to tell these axles apart if i go to the pull-a-part to start hunting?
jam0o0 02-03-2010, 01:11 PM 10.25's will have the standard 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern. the 10.5's will have disk brakes and a metric 8 lug pattern.
cutting of the big radius arm brackets is easy. what i can't remember is if there is any mild steel on the drivers' side tube to weld you new suspension onto. if i were you i'd go radius arm. or use the bottom half of the factory mount for your lowers and then you only have to make one mount for your top link.
the D50's haven't been used for a wile. just don't walk out of the place with an axle unless you've personally taken the cover off.
Ibuildembig 02-03-2010, 01:23 PM Easiest way to tell a 60 from a 50 is the pinion nut is 1 5/16"
Duty calls 02-03-2010, 02:28 PM Super 60's are in bigger 2005+ f450/f550 trucks

The 2008+ "Tow Boss" F-350's also got the super 60's.
iridektm 02-03-2010, 05:30 PM 10.25's will have the standard 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern.
Not to certain on this. My 10.25" has the metric pattern.
spyder6 02-03-2010, 05:40 PM thanks for all your help guys. i appreciate any more info you might be able to stumble upon. i dont have a budget im trying to operate within, though im not trying to get crazy either.
right now im feeling it out to see if a pair of these with lockers vs spider9s built up. id sure be saving weight gain by going with spider 9s though.
bowtied_micky 02-04-2010, 06:16 AM Rockwells - cheaper, easier, tougher.
spyder6 02-04-2010, 06:23 AM rockwells arnt my thing
gfbgreaser289 02-04-2010, 10:35 AM how are they cheaper after you factor in the brakes to be driven on the street. a locker and lockout hubs. already its cheaper to run 60/10.25. thats not even tires and rims. were are you located. i have a 60/10.5 for $800. all the lugs nuts rear locker. 4.10's

bowtied_micky 02-05-2010, 09:33 AM the super 60 he mentioned is 4 grand. thats how they are cheaper. I bought my rocks for 800 bucks, hundred more got me 5 rims.
spyder6 02-05-2010, 04:49 PM its 4 grand for a brand new one from ford racing, i dont need a brand new one.
that still doesnt factor in wheel brakes, the fact that they're a toploader so they are HUGE, and everything else that'd take to get them road ready for a daily driver.
the regular 60, or the super 60 already has all that, and its even ABS ready if i were so inclined. id run Mog's before rockwells, atleast in my book.
