: Stupid welding question/idea...

I need to do about 20 minutes of stick welding -- but do not have a stick welder.

Do I:

1) Rig up some batteries and pretend I am on the trail.

2) Tap the power off my Millermatic 175 like I would to run my spool gun. (<-- I like this idea but would it actually work?? My Ready Welder works like a champ this way.)

3) Buy a home Depot welder, use it, return it.

4) Load up my crap and take it someone elses house.

buy one on craigslist, use it, and then resell it. those 220V Lincoln arc welders sell dirt cheap all the time. Either that or load it up and let someone else do it.

I need to weld some cast (axle housing) and the easiest/cheapest way is to buy the correct stick rods.... In 10 years this is the only time I have needed a stick welder. I do not have the room to buy one that just sits.

Find a fab shop/weding shop around and call them up. Buy the shop lunch if they weld it for you. We do it all the time.

Depending on what you need to weld to cast and how much weld surface you have, mig it. I have migged all of my axles and have not had a problem. Throw a torch on it to heat it up, double or triple pass it, and wrap it up to let it cool slowly. If you are really worried use some stainless wire as it has a higher nickle content.
