: SM420 front driveshaft options???

Here's the low down: it's a '70 FJ55 with a 350 - sm420 - warden's clocked adaptor plate - 3spd tcase, and it's sprung over with the front pinion pointed up at the output of the t-case.

So I know that I need to run a CV shaft off of the front of my tcase (3spd), but is there enough room with the massive reverse hump on the 420? I know that some of you have run into it before, so I need to know how you did it- or is it even a problem? I plan on calling Jess first thing tomorrow morning- but I thought I'd poll the peanut gallery first... I need a front shaft for the pig run next weekend!?!?

Thanks for any info you've got-
Zipp. :fj:

Unless you're running down the highway in 4wd, I don't see why you'd need a CV up front. At crawl speeds, a stock driveshaft should be fine. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. :D

In the front? Are you planning on running at road speeds with the hubs loccked? I turned my pinion up 20 deg from stock, set the knuckles at 5 deg, for a net of 15 deg. I don't get any binding or vibrations at wheeling speeds using 1310 joints in the front.

I have a fresh shaft with spicer slip yoke and 1310 joints for sale. I'm leaving early in the am for Farmington, but if you are interested I'll take some pics, and measure it when I get back. I paid $260 for it and never used it, make an offer.

I plan to check the board while on the road but won't be able to do anything with it till I return a week from Tuesday.

I forget to mention, the flanges have been turned down to fit the sm420, I bought it as a spare.

Monday AM:
I just measured it, now I'm leaving, it's 29" compressed length. It has the 3 spd flanges on it. I think I have the matching pinion flange and tcase flange also, not sure though.

If Brandon doesn't want it, somebody else make an offer. I'm a reasonable guy, hehehe! This thing is all new.

Just have the stock front shaft modified to fit. There is really no need for a CV on the front when, as the others have said, it's not turning at road speeds. Depending on the particular 420 case you have, there may still be some grinding required to make it fit.

A cv will not clear the hump. I thought about putting a cv on mine
but there is not enough room.
I was driving down hwy 80 in a snow storm a couple years ago,
And I was wishing I had a cv front.

The older small flange u-joints will work on that setup. I do not know of any others that work. I wanted to use later model, post '74 shafts but there was no way.

I just used the yoke and slip off of a minitruck, about the same size as the smaller LC stuff but with a longer splined shaft.
You have to grind the flange down to the washers when it's all bolted up, in my case I did not have to grind the tranny once I did this, and works great.

we had the same thing on my brothers crusier. he has the wardens clocked plate & is running a HIGH angle, long slip 4speed minitruck cv. the tranny had to be ground about 3/16 to fit but it fits & works like a glove!!! + that cv can handle about 45+ degrees w/ no trouble at all. I picked up the shaft from this board for $25 & it cost $90 to have it lengthened. same as a regular shaft will cost you. that thing will run at 80mph w/ the hubs locked & no vibration. the bolt pattern on the cv was welded & then re-drilled to fit the crusier flange.
