: just to get a feel for full width
Cliffy [JD] 10-26-2001, 04:02 PM Does anyone have pics of their (or any) scout with full width axles and tires appx 35-37"x12.5 ?????
I've been talkin' about narrowing axles, but I don't know....maybe I'd like full width.
Maybe I shoudl run full width and then if I don't like it, narrow 'em afterwards..
Ben W 10-26-2001, 04:30 PM Fullwidth 8-lug D44 front D60 rear. 36x12.50/15 TSL's on 15x8's with 4" of backspacing. About 82" wide overall. Roughly 10" or 11" wider overall than Scout II axles.

Curtis 10-26-2001, 04:44 PM Cliffy, the full width swap I just finished is the best thing I did. The thing is MUCH more stable and just feels better on the road and trail. AND, to top it off, it looks better, IMO.

jdjanda 10-26-2001, 04:59 PM You guys got me thinking, how much wider is the IH truck front ends, seeing as how I have one. Maybe I swap in a rear dana 60 and leave the truck front un-touched. If the truck front end is odd I won't use it.

Within an inch of the width of my front end.. they're all give or take the same.

What type of mods where made to achieve that kind of flex???... that's commendable.

The frames on the earlier Scouts are wider than a Scout II's frame My full width front 44 was a direct bolt in if I wanted. However, I swaped all my springs at the same time with the 58" rear Chevy springs (just 6 of the leafs in each pack). AND, I scored a whopping 910 on a 30 degree ramp with the FRONT tires. In fact, I can drive it up and over a 4' loading ramp behind the local Ace Hardware store with the left front on the dock and the 3 others still on the ground

Damn dude...that's some flex.
As for the Scout width... I think that Scout II's are wider by a few inches--Body only. I don't know what the frame width is but early Scouts are 32" on center all the way back,

I don't suppose you have any pictures of the spring swap. I've been debating what to do about springs. Do you have to offset the center pin? I'd appreciate any pics or advice you have. Thanks

Unfortunately, neither of my cameras work. There are a few guys around who do though so I will try to get some pics of the underside.
However, the '70 something rear Chevy springs are offset. The hole is 4" closer to one end than the other (closer to the rear on the Chevy). I turned the springs around in the rear and left them the right way in the front. This makes the short end of the packs look at each other. I did this because I already extended the frame rails in the front by 4 inches.
In addition, the springs are 2 1/2" wide but 3" where the eye hole goes through. This made it simple for spring mounts because I just put 1/4" plate on each side of the frame, welded, drilled the hole and the spring fit in there perfectly
It also made putting the shackle mounts in easy too. What I did was cut an 1 1/2" hole in the frame, put in some 1 1/2" x 0.120 wall tubing, use some CJ spring bushings, and the shackle mounts are in the frame and bullet proof. You can see that part in this picture, including the mistake hole I drilled and how I extended the front of the frame all the way to the front bumper.

ScoutsHonor 10-28-2001, 10:38 AM I've almost got my the front end swapped into my Scout, (Fullsize Dana 60 from a Chevy), and with the 44" Boggers & my wheels with 2.5" of backspacing, the Duck is exactly 8 foot wide. It looks REALLY good (at least my opinion), the fullsize swap just brings out a lot of attitude, but then again so do 44" Boggers..
73project 10-28-2001, 10:56 AM Matt Green. Do you have any pictures of your scout. It sounds damn near what I want for mine.

Joe, I'll put it like this. Don't waste your time with anything else. Go big cause you'll eventually want to go there.
I got my Scout back in '97. In early '98 a friend and I were at the Reno PNP. He pointed out a front and rear '60 I could have picked up for UNDER $300. I said no way cause I'd never need anything that big. What a moronic move THAT was.

Thanks for the info. Have you noticed any problem with your pinion angle due to the offset centerpin? That's really the only thing keeping me from running really long springs on my beast. I can't wait to see some more pictures and some action shots when you get a chance.
Travis
ScoutsHonor 10-28-2001, 03:49 PM I don't have any pics of it yet, as of right now I've only got the front axle in it, and its not even in all the way yet. The tires are on it, but I've gotta fab a u-bolt plate for the passenger side. I used 4" lift springs with spring over to get the clearance, and it clears them with quite a bit of room left over... I've also got a 3" body lift, but I'm considering switching to maybe some 2.5" springs, or just removing a leaf or two out of the 4" springs, just to get a little bit of flex outta them. The stuff for my 1/4 elliptic should be here by next week... so as soon as I get everything done to it I'll be sure and post some pics...

I used long enough shackles to keep the pinion and caster angle correct. I think my shackles in the front are 8.5" long but remember they go through the frame and not a regular shackle mount.
