Geez, I think you're gonna need 8"-10" with a 3" body lift, but it depends on how much fender trimming you wanna do. My 72 has 4"sus. and 3" body with 39.5s and cut front fenders (rear soon).
The 73-87 Chev fenders are very narrow at the bottom and take a lot of lift to clear big rubber and keep the sheetmetal intact.

I have cut out now and 4" lift w/35", maybe a 3" BL will work

I suspect a 3"BL will get you in the 38, 39" range. I think you will need to get the saws all out again, or more sus. lift. Maybe get the BL put in and put on the 42s, then see where to go from there. Maybe a little more trim will do it, or it may be ok, you won't know till you try it.

I am running 40's with ~5.5" lift.

42" can be done with 6" lift.

I used to run 39's on a 6" lift. My buddy runs 42's on an 8". Cut the fenders back to the lower bolt and go for it.

Got 38's on a 4" lift.No rubbing, but that what my friend Mr. Sawzall is for!!!Pretty damn sure I could run 40's with a little more trimming or extending the front diff forward an 1" or so!I don't need no stinkin' body lift!!!!

You can do it with a 6" lift if you move your front axle forward 1 to 1-1/2" and start cutting. I have 38's on with 4" lift and no rubbing, but it takes lots and lots of cutting.

I just bought 38.5x14.5x16.5's to put on my 79 Jimmy w/ a 4" lift. Yes, time to get out the sawzall!

6" suspension, cutouts, and probably a 3" BL. Buddy of mine has this setup with 38.5X16's & can't decide if he's gonna ditch the BL or just go with 44" rubber.

Should be able to get it done with 6" lift, front axle pushed forward 1.5-2", and a whole lot of trimming. Might need to add a short bodylift to it if you have real flexy suspension.
