I just got back from a 3 day wheeling trip, and am preparing for another, 5 day trip to Farmington in a couple of weeks. Today, when I wedged my rig in a crack and tried to pull it out, when I got it fully loaded, it made a horrible, "gear-grinding-ish" sound. When I let off on the tension and then spooled it back in, if worked normally until it made the noise again when it got fully weighted.
Before I start tearing it down, am I correct in thinkin it is the brake discs?
Thanks in advance for your help.

The brake assembly does make noise when winching.

Take it apart and if it is toast, you can take my winch to Farmington....

Thanks Nolen! I hope I don't have to take you up on that, but will if I have to.
Charly, I know a correctly functioning 8274 should not make any noise from the brake when winching, but what about if it has a worn out brake?

I was saying it does make noise, but it's the ratcheting noise that I was referring to.
My first thought is to make sure the freewheel gear is all the way engaged (or disengaged)...mine will make a gear grinding sort of noise if that isn't properly engaged.
Also, I would pull the top cover (easy to do) and check out that gear and specifically the cam gears on the pinion shaft (this is the shaft the brake rides on) I got my 8274 with one of the cam gears broken. Of course one is avilable seperately and one must be purchased with a new shaft even though they both can come off that shaft (thanks Warn).
Good Luck,
Charly

Hey, thanks for pointing out that I cannot read. I completely misread your post. Sorry!
I will pull it down tonight and see what I can find.
Do the friction discs ever wear out in the brake that would allow it to slip and grind? It almost sounded like an old 10 speed's brakes when they would chatter on the wheel when stopping, just a heck of alot louder. That similarity is the only reason I keep focusing on the brake.
