: Transfer case options
dcmsu 10-07-2002, 06:55 AM I will be running a 350 with SM465 in my YJ. At this point I don't know what transfer case I will be using. It needs to have a drivers side front output, and I would like it to have low gears, like 4:1, and of course be strong enough. The Jeep will have front and rear d60's, so everything is pretty stout. I have thought about using a YJ 231 and putting in low gears and tailshaft kit, etc. But is it really worth putting all that money into it or would it be better to spring for something else....I wish the atlas wasn't so expensive...what t-case are you guys running?
Dan
Jakesteramalamajama 10-07-2002, 07:13 AM 231=not worth it.
Let me be the first to say: Get an Atlas II. There. Now that we got that outta the way your next best (and next most expensive) option would be the D300 with a flip kit and gears. A Chevy NP241 is also a good, inexpensive solution (less-so with a 4:1 kit).

MNBen 10-07-2002, 07:20 AM What is the strength difference, between a NP231 with the heavy duty 32 spline tailshaft kit, and chain upgrade and a NP241. Not enough to make a difference. Whatever you do it will cost you around $1500 - $2200 for a driver side drop 4-1 case. All of the options are around the same price eventually. The 300 has the advantage of a iron case, and smallest overall length of all the options. The atlas, has the advantage of all the work already being done, just bolt it on. If you stick with a 231 or 241, with the SYE kit, you have less money invested initially, and can put in a 4-1 gearset later after saving up money. Or you can spend $300 more on a flipped 300 case installed, and put a 4-1 kit in later if you don't have the money right away. It's up to you, all the options work fine.

Planetary assembly: 241 uses a larger 6-gear planetary that has a torque rating of approximately double the stock 3-gear unit in a 231. Even compared to a 6-gear Tera Low replacement, the stock 241 unit uses bigger gears.
Case: 241 is thicker and stronger with more structural ribs.
Front output: 241 front output is 32-spline
Chain: 241 chain is thicker than the 231 HD chain upgrade. In any case I've never seen one break in ANY New Process case (even in a 231 with the stock width). Chains got a bad rep for stretching because of the BW 1333 cases in quadratrac Jeeps. NP/NV chains never need to be replaced for stretching. At least I've never heard of one stretching.
The stock 241 has held up fine behind the Ramjet 350/NV4500 in my YJ. I got it for $400, put a $300 JB SYE kit in it and have wheeled it since this spring. No problems so far. Sure, I'll eventually get an Atlas for the twin stick, durability and lower gears, but 2 grand is a whole lotta ching-a-ling.

how about a 203/205 doubler setup

BW 13-39. The 203 is also known to stretch chains. With both, just replace them every 40-50k miles and they aren't a problem.

So I was one number off... :flipoff2:

Exactly.
and then extend the wheel base.
dcmsu, I went with 5.0 HO, NP435, 203 with 3:1 gearset and 205.
1:1, 2:1, 3.1:1 and 6.2:1 reduction options.
Someone here on this board told me a long time ago that chains are for bicycles. :flipoff2: I listened.
dcmsu 10-07-2002, 03:03 PM I probably will extend the wheelbase a little...2" maybe. I don't want to go too far though, I still want to have full corners on the rear fenders...keep the mud and stuff from flying up and into the cab. I am doing a spring over with 2.5" springs, and have a standard D60 rear so I figured the 203+205 combo would be too long, not to mention quite heavy.

NE-RokToy 10-07-2002, 04:28 PM Do you have the axles yet? If not I would go with a passanger side front diff and dana 300 or whatever front axle and an atlas if you can afford it.
Keith Strong 10-07-2002, 05:03 PM Atlas II.

cord318 10-07-2002, 08:05 PM Your building a stout rig. Get the 200 series ideas out of your head. Just go Atlas. Pricing has been done to try and justify the 300 flipped or 231 built up. I couldn't justify throwing any money at the 231. Had to get the Atlas.
Robert 10-08-2002, 07:10 AM Don't waste your money.
Do it once and be done with transfer case problems.
Atlas II
Move on to the next part of the build up.

Got my vote too....
Anyone wanted a 231HD with a stretched chain. I got one that came out of my Durango sitting on my garage floor collecting dust.... It's fer sale.
Heavy vehicle (D=5640 lbs), V8 torque (330 ft/lb), large tires (35"), decent wheeling (rocks of CA and OK), chain driven t-case = recipe for strange noises over time. :flipoff2:
Travis Waldher 10-08-2002, 02:40 PM Same here... Atlas II... Just got mine in this weekend... I'm waiting on drivelines... but sure was fun watching the yokes spin. (hey.. I know... cheap thrill)
I compared costs of geared down 231, etc. but when all was said and done. The price comes really close to a basic Atlas II 4.3.
tuckster 10-10-2002, 11:07 AM just another nail in the coffin... don't do the 231 thing...
get atlas, or get a 205 and be done with it...
one word for ya "twinsticks"

Atlas II. Yeah I got a buddy who sold his soul to the devil to get one but man that Atlas kicks ass:eek: Your going to spend that money now or later might as well not do baby steps. If you really can't afford it then throw as little at the 231 as possible run it until it dies and start collecting cans until you can get the Atlas. It'll sit between the d60's like it was born there.
