: Desert Tool Bender?
StinkBug 10-07-2002, 11:25 AM I was talkin to the guy at the Desert Tool Booth at Off Road Expo yesterday, and it seemed like he had a real good deal on their benders. Also said that he could make it to be compatible with JD2 dies. Said the main die was in the same location, just the hole in the follower was in a different place. He quoted me $575 for the bender and 2 dies if i ordered this week. It looks like a quality part, and almost the exact same design as the JD model 3. Does anyone know anything about these guys? Anyone else talk to em at the show, or dealt with em before. At that price I may end up ordering a bender from them this week, but i wanted to hear as much feedback as possible. Thanks.

GOAT1 10-07-2002, 01:27 PM I know the guy pretty well and have one of his benders. It is of very good quality and works well, probably the best one of the JD2 style of bender. His hole-saw notcher is the best one made and works very well. The only thing is that he is somewhat of a flake, he is not going to rip you off or anything dishonest, but some times he takes a while to make parts. I would make sure he has everything you need before you purchase anything, and buy it all at once, if not you may be waiting on one little part before you can bend anything.
StinkBug 10-07-2002, 03:48 PM Thanks for the word Goat, do you know for sure if he can make it to fit the JD dies, or should i just count on buying all the stuff up front. I'm plannin on buyin the bender and 3 or 4 dies up front, plus the notcher. It looked like a very sturdy unit at the show, my only beef was that the pin that held the main die in also held the bender together, which makes changing dies a pain. but i figure its a small inconvenience.

the JD2 model 3 is the same in that the main pin also holds the swing arm
StinkBug 10-07-2002, 04:33 PM so it looks like the JD and the DT benders are pretty evenly matched, I think i'll be givin em a call today or tomorrow. Anyone have Desert Tools # handy?

GOAT1 10-07-2002, 04:57 PM As far as the main pin goes, he makes a a bender that has a sleeve on the main pin so the bender doesn't fall apart when you change dies. Ask him about it. I don't know about using the JD2 dies, but that would be a smart thing to make it compatible since JD2 has a bigger selection of dies. I think his dies are alot better than the JD2, he uses cold rolled steel and that are harder and hold up longer than the JD2.

Go over here and clicky clicky. Get the number off the site. Last I knew, Desert Tool was in the same shop, but at least they should point you in the right direction.
By the way, when I was there Saturday morning, their booth was empty.
