does anyone know what red line would be on a 1977 chevy 305?

Is it a fresh engine, or one with many miles on it. If it is pretty worn, i wouldn't recommend anything over 5500 for longevity. If it is broken in properly and reasonably fresh, I wouldn't be afraid of 6000. I turned that in my S-10 with a smallblock in it and had no prob's. the "new" truck with a 350 hasn't complained either. (Got about 30,000 miles on her now, drive it 350 miles to school one way and use it for a DD) Friend of mine isn't afraid of 7 grand, but that is twisting a 350 with a stock bottom end a little much for me.

my engine has about 60k on it. my 93 chevy says it red lines at 4500 it also has a 305 in it.

Then I would keep it under 5500 for a long life. Or, since you do have a spare truck, give it hell and report back what it finally dies at! :D

Unless it's been tweaked some it won't make any extra power over 4500 RPM anyways...so why bother twisting it up another 1000 or more RPM?

305? Under load it will fall on it's face before it will rev high enough to do any damage, free-revving, well, the stock HEI is junk above 5000, and it will probably start floating valves around 5500 if it's all stock with truck heads and stock valve springs.

I went to a bachelor party where they placed bets on how long it would take to blow up a 305 with a brick on the pedal, but it never really blew up, it ran for an hour or so at about 4800 (the cam was so whipped it would go any higher) and then they started messing with it, they cut the belts (running!) so no more water pump, and cut the oil cooler lines hoping for major carnage, but it just got up to about 260 wound down to a stop. The next day they jump started it and drove it up and down the road unil it got hot again, she was knockin' hard but didn't rev enough to toss a rod. The same group of Hillrods did the same thing at another party with a Renalt Alliance, only they drove it around, jumped it, rolled it, pushed down trees with it, and it went to the junkyard with a blown up trans, smoked clutch, no radiator, trashed CV's, no steering, missing springs in the rear, and it still ran.

Sheesh Aaron, registered here in June, and already have 864 posts?

Back on topic, other than draining the oil, or cold valve float, you will be hard pressed to kill a 305, or a 350 for that matter. I have seen the brick on the gas pedal trick go until the vehicle ran out of gas, and still ran fine the next day.

It's not my fault I've got a whole lotta nuthin to say....besides, everyone that knows me already knows all my silly stories and anecdotes, so now I'm forced to pray on the defenseless internet. Sooner or later I'll wear that out too.
