I do not know much about the D70 rear axle. How does it compare to a D60? Are parts easy to get for them? What are the different lengths that they have come in? I am looking for a rear axle for my 89 4Runner and was going to put a D60 in the rear, but I might be able to get a good deal on a D70 and I am just wonder ing if I should go that route or should I get a D60. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Scott

jiMMy, don't you run a rear D70? Did you shave the housing? What is a Dodge D70 worth that has been totally rebuilt with 35 spline, 5.13's and a detroit tru-trac?

TIA

You can get 70's for about $120 at P-N-P...less if you get them on 1/2 off day. So, add the cost of the locker, R&P, etc...

Just make sure that you are getting a std 70. I dunno how to tell but you can get the BOM numbers and then call WCD at 635-0950 and one of the Sales guys can tell you what it is.

Disk brakes are just as easy as a 14 bolt to do.

I believe the 70s went to 35 spline in either 74 or 75. Mine is a 73 and has the 23 spine axles. The only downfall to that is locker selection, the shafts themselves are plenty strong. I just welded mine up and called it good. There was a 23 spline Detroit, but who knows about the availability of it.

As far as shaving goes I just put a 60 cover on it and trimmed up to it. Now has basically the same clearance as a standard 60.

1st: Why havent' you pulled the axle?? If it's a D70, it's FF and takes 2 minutes to pull...

2nd: 35 spline is pretty common (I cant' distinguish by year), but later model Dodge's had 32 spline....There were others (mentioned above) that had 23 spline....

If you have doubts, why not invest 120 seconds and pull the fawkin' axle??? I was buying a D70B and wanted to know for sure....That's about how long it took to find out...:flipoff2:

What are the differences between the D70 standard, D70U and the D70HD? And why would I want one over the others?

TIA

it takes 2 minutes if the axle has tires on it OR if it's on the ground. Mine was still held up by the springs and had NO wheels on it...try breaking those bolts on the ends, while the hub and drum moves:mad: And the fact that they were lettin' the dogs out in 30 mins, kinda had me wanting to get that axle out quick. So i was banking on it to be 35 spline...Of all the luck i get a 23 spline. I don't think it's going to break ever though, maybe when and if i go to 42's.

oh well good luck, hope its 35 spline;)

It is a D70HD 35 spline. Old Scout mentioned that I should make sure it is a standard D70. I am just wondering why?

Dana 70hd is huge and found only in chevy dulley trucks. Nothing personal but you dont need anything more than a 60 in a truck weighing under 5000lbs and no more than small block power. I do understand the need to upgrade but going to a 70 is extream for the weight of your truck. Stay away from duel wheel trucks and any dodges later than 90. The 35 spline 70s were in dodges from 76-90. And fords of same years. BUT PULL THE SHAFT TO BE SHURE. Good luck.

I dunno' why people are saying the 70HD is HUGE compaired to a regular 70...Or even a 60 for that matter. Check the pic...This is a 70HD (non-dulley)...Hard to tell from the pic, but that is a Avalanche rock ring (60/70)...The HD housing hangs' about 5/16ths lower than the standard 60. Dunno' what the housing came off of...It was found half burried in the mud at a local yard.

The other benni of the 70HD is that it's a smooth housing on the bottom...No lip to hang-up on.

Here's another shot of the housing...You can see (sorta') how it's smooth on top and bottom...Good bang for the buck IMO.
