: D44 Thick gear/thin gear Q.
That Mick 10-07-2002, 04:24 PM Is there any reason you can't run a thick gear 4.30 ratio (with proper carrier) R&P in one end and a 4.27 thin gear (with proper carrier) R&P in the other??
Its all the same tooth counts, right???
Thanks
Matt
4Bangler 10-07-2002, 04:38 PM 4.30/4.27=0.7%<2%
I don't see why not. If you need 4.27 gears on open carriers for a Dana 44 or Dana 27, I've got some, stock '70 CJ-5, so the Dana 44 is probably a coarse spline pinion.
That Mick 10-07-2002, 04:44 PM Thanks for the offer, I need 30 splines, though.
If you want rid of a thin gear 4.27 R&P, PM me, I'll take it.

No. The gear ratio is the ratio of teeth on the ring gear to the teeth on the pinion gear. Different ratio means a different tooth count.
4.27/4.30 is fine. In years past, most 4x4's would come with ratios of this difference
That Mick 10-07-2002, 04:57 PM Try as I might, I can't find a reasonable tooth count for the R&P that gives a 4.30 ratio, leading me to believe that its the same tooth count as a 4.27, with the ratio rounded up.
I may be wrong, you may be right, I may be crazy.
I is/was worried more about the different carriers & ect then the exact ratio.
4Bangler 10-07-2002, 05:07 PM The carriers don't matter, as long as they are the right series for the ratio, ie: extra thick gears are how the after market "cheats" the carrier break so you don't have to buy a low series carrier. As for the spline count, I'm talking about the splines that the pinion yoke slides on to, on the pinion, not the axle splines, most older Dana 44's had a coarse spline, newer ones were a more standard fine spline, I have the yokes to match, and I have a 4.27 geared closed knuckle Dana 27 and offset but flanged axle Dana 44 out of a '70 CJ-5. I could use the flanged shafts in another axle (5.38's with 2-piece shafts) but the gears are useless to me. PM me if you're interested, I assume you're trying to make a Dana 44 front match the ratio of a Dana 44 rear out of a similar Jeep, 4.27 gear were not all that common.

Edit: Guys, don't kill me, notice the smily :D:D
JEEPRZ 10-07-2002, 07:14 PM 4.30- 43/10 These are common in the Excuzu RODEO 44s

I thought about 43/10, I thought the pinion count was too low. I stand corrected. And, yep, I'm nabbing the thick gears from an Isuzu
Pathmaker 10-08-2002, 12:19 AM I'll have a 4.10 r&p from a rear Rodeo D44 very soon. Is that what you need? It's yours if you want it, putting 5.38s in. So I won't have to change carriers, correct?
That Mick 10-08-2002, 06:41 AM Nope, 4.27 is more my style. Thanks for the offer.
I think you will need a new carrier, though.
To the best of my knowlege, all isuzu D44's used the fast (2.72-3.73) carrier, with a thick ring gear set on the 4.10 and 4.30 ratio's.
Might want to ask Stinkbug, he's the only guy I can think of w/ a Isuzu.
