1. Syock wheelbase is around 80 inches- Optimal depends on how tall and how wide you are going. Tire size, wheel width, lots of variables depending on personal preference and intended use.

2. I've never run coilovers, but I have owned lots of flatties and I know that the right leafs work great. The guys that I know that have gone coilovers love them except for the cost and the fact that you may have to buy a couple of sets of springs to get 'just right'.

3. Can't recommend.

I hope that helps more than "SEARCH"

Well you can get 90" out of them without cutting out the whole rear buy pusing the front out 5' and the rear out 5" and if you are going coilovers then run fulsize axles and then bring the tires back in if you want to by runn wheels with less offset. By going with a fullsize front you can get a nice shock angle when you weld the mounts on the housing out further. You get better shock action and less body roll. Like the other guy said how wide depends on how tall and how long depends on what you want to climb.

I know wheel base is all the rage, but I just love the look of a stock proportioned flatty, maybe push the front axle out a bit, but I like the rear where it is, I'd stay Waggy width, around 60" and the wheelbase around 85" or so, maybe less, but then, that's just me.

If you want one that's already built I think there's on on E-Bay for $95,000, or did he come down to $65,000? Anybody know if that thing ever sold?

There have been a lot of good points made here already, but here's my $.02
If you are going to stay somewhat stock and just trail it lightly, flatties don't need to be modified that much. The narrow trac will allow you to squeeze thru places full widths and big tires have problems. The places that you are going to have problems are unboxed frame (which is probably rusted) and not a whole lot of power (if you are running stock). You don't need a lot of power if you keep the tires to around 31's, as your gears will more than compensate.
Or you can drop in a v6, box the frame, and go full width like mine! :D
