First all, thank you everyone of the volunteers that said they were going to show and did.

We couldn't have come nearly as close to pulling of the event as we did without you.

i had so many of you coming back up to me asking me what more you could do at the end of your day.... that means a lot and it helped a ton.

I had a few FAIL's, i was a tad (to say the least) under prepared for the crowds and i will take responsibility for that.

Blaine, You and your crew did an amazing job with what you were given.... and I'm sorry i had to steel your bodies for a checkpoint. you guys had a VERY tough assignment with that road crossing and i thank you for taking it on.

Rock Brawlers, you guys did great. Never got you to the spot at sledge where i wanted you, because you guys were helping put out the issues with crowds everywhere else. you guys did you jobs great.

Checkpoint workers, you guys did amazing. working all day (and into the night) is not an easy task, but, to my knowledge you guys did everything exactly as asked and got thru everyone the same way which was just perfect.

Recovery crews..... you guys worked the latest.... I don't even know how much you guys had to do during the race, but, you guys were still dragging cars back late into the night. You guys fully rock.... and cook a mean taco too!!!

and yes, i'm adding to this as i remember things.

Jess and Jake, the two of you in the dark working that checkpoint alone..... you guys did amazing. you had something like 60 rigs pass thru i rememeber... don't forget to pm me with info.

Terry (brd) helped me a ton getting prep'd for the meeting and then was bouncing around all day race day. started the day at check point one and finished the day at the finish line, until the last guy got there. props to you.

Media transport.... well, i wasn't involved with ya, but, you guys had your hands full. I'll let Mark put his piece in

Wild Bill and Sunni..... what can i say. you guys were working harder than I on that radio trying to keep things straight with the times. you two worked your tails off and did a great job at it. my head would have exploded trying to keep all that scoring straight! I don't know many beers i owe you now bill, but, i'm sure its at least a 30 pack! and as you so eloquently stated "peace out girl scout"

Noah and Sena(sp?) aka the wonder twins........ you guys were fully getting it around there this week. any and everything that needed to be done, you two were on it. stage/start finish line and on and on. everything looked great.

the sound guy..... you and andy were humping the first day i saw you and you were humping all week trying to keep everything going. damn good job!

i needed 20 more people to just work crowd control at sledge.

I hope that many of you had enough fun to want to come back next year.

To all the vendors that donated for our raffle... THANK YOU. Hopefully Charlene will get me a list of everyone so i can properly thank you, but off the top of my head..

It was a good time out there, though we were waaay under staffed at the many road crossings getting into sledge.

There were too many assholes that needed more than words spoken to them to realize it is a bad idea to cross at non designated areas heading into the Sledge area.

It was fun none the less, and I'm sure allowed me to save a few bucks on therapy having all of those people to yell at :D

Blaine..... I don't know if I can ever express how much you and your team did for us this year. and the thing is... i know i am only getting a small glimps of what you guys had to deal with. I hope that you and everyone else in your group don't see my shortcomming of prep this year in this reguard as something on the Hammerking Orgization and want to come back next year in some role of help.

Shaun, You did the best you could with what you had and should be proud. It is impossible to predict all the things that popped up on race day. Some of those spread over 135 mile track. When we arrived at check 18 to setup there was maybe 300 cars parked all around. Then around 4 there was what seemed to be over a thousand with people as far as the eyes can see. Thanks for letting us be part of the race it was a blast. We worked the LCQ with Big Chris, the start line (best seat in the house) and check 18. Thanks to my wife for keeping the number's and my buddy's Mark and Dennis. Who I sucked into working with me..

Shaun,

The Brawlers that volunteered, while disappointed that we didn't get to do crowd control, were still happy to help out. As far as next year goes, some will be back, some might not. This has nothing to do with you personally, or with someone wanting to bring a glass bottle in their trailer .

Gunmetalcruz, and to all the competitors

As a volunteer I can tell you that a handshake and a thank you from a competitor is just as good if not better than winning a prize in the raffle.

You are most certainly welcome Shaun. :smokin: I had a GREAT week!

I worked for Mark Matthews mostly, but also worked the LCQ. I helped Mark stakeout the LCQ on Monday, then helped on Blaines crew at the LCQ finish line Tuesday & Wednesday.

I forget which day it was - but whenever that guy accidentally drove "under" the Start/Finish Line with his toyhauler & broke it loose (I saw him do it), I got on my radio & told Dave, then helped put it back together.

Thursday I preran out to BFG Pit, top of Crowbar, bottom of Crowbar, Valley of the Kings, and Wrecking Ball Pit. I drove ~77 miles of the race course that day.

Race day (Friday) I helped Mark with transporting Media Crew Unit #6 (Chris)around to Crowbar, Valley of the Kings, and WB Pit. Chris got some outstanding film that should make for an excellent 2010 KOH video.

Looking forward to next year. :D

He did work his ass off the entire week, but on race day from 6am to 1130ish pm and with EVERYTHING he had to do he did keep his great attitude :D He didn't have the best working conditions aka 'office' set up ;), but he kept going and kept everyone as organized as he could. I was only with him from 730am - 1030ish when my frost bitten toes drove me back to the trailer but I was amazed how much work he did, how much work ALL the volunteer's did and for nothing more than being part of an awesome race.

Check Point 9 in the House...

peeps, kept saying that we were crazy to drive over 4,500 miles to be a volunteer in KOH. Props to ya'll for the raffle and the attitude that i witnessed was cooool.... all night and day. !!!

I also liked a couple of the drivers, a couple of the staff (Camo in is PJ's sucking on a bottle of Jack) and a few vendors that came in and said thanks to us.

that was cool and made it a lot easier. lets hope we get out thier to help once again.

Frank,

my trailer was parked right behind the pirate lounge and I was lying in bed trying to get some rest as I am fighting this damn chest cold and feeling miserable. I heard the event going on and just wanted to step in and say thanks. But I have to be honest. when I stepped in the tent I was not prepared for the sight before me and I was overwhelmed with emotion.

the sight of all the volunteers was truly humbling. you guys are the heart and soul of the event and I am grateful for your efforts.

plane and simple. without your commitment and hard work there would never be a King Of the Hammers or even a pirate4x4 for that matter.

so to each and every one of the guys and gals who took the time to give your time and effort to the event I say from my heart , Thank You.

you guys are my heros.

This is the second year we have volunteered.

I dont know if its possible or not, but it would be wayyyy cool if volunteers could get a free or discounted copy of the DVD when it comes out, so we can see what we missed while volunteering :)

You just need cell coverage where you're at. We wanted an update and where we were we could only hear the lakebed and not the relay. So, Dave being the resourceful Kiwi that he is, called home to Iowa on his cell and got race info from his wife who was watching the Pirate coverage. :p

Same here. I spend the day in the pits (with no AT&T coverage). I went out to CP8 and took my phone. It blew up with texts asking how Bigelow was doing. I called my wife, and she filled me in on the whole race.

A suggestion for next year would be to have a speaker or six in the pits, so the teams can hear the announcers.

I had the same thought--let's help and put these together for Shaun. Caution tape and a few stakes would have been super handy to help point racers into and out of our CP.

That's funny--we did hear Relay, but wish we'd have had cell coverage @ CP 7.

I think dumping the PA/Pirate feed onto an unused radio channel so pits/checkpoints/fans/etc. could tune into would work well. I could help get this going.

There was also mention of having a local AM radio station doing a live remote? They might have a huge opportunity to sell ads from local Lucerne/Lander businesses, restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, fuel stations, etc.

First, Shaun, you are the King of the Volunteers. Every time I saw you, you were working your ass off and still took the time to thank other volunteers for what they were doing. Good to meet you and work with you.

Second, as a video transport for Pinned, I had the opportunity to see a fair amount of the eastern half of the course and would be happy to chime in with some (hopefully) helpful suggestions when you're ready.

Not sure if I'll make it next year, but I'd sure like to volunteer again if I can.

I have a better idea. How about everyone with an FM radio in their camp tune in to "Radio Hammer". I'd be more than happy to put a FM transmitter on the air that would cover the necessary area nicely.

While it would be apropo to call it "Pirate Radio", it would be legal. :)

I know my post count is very low, but I've been doing ham radio communications for a few famous 100 mile foot races for over almost 15 years. Setting up an FM broadcast station would be easy and give everyone a chance to tune in to all the interviews, driver meetings, recaps, and live play by play race reports. Of course this would all have to be have the blessing of the KOH organizers and Pirate4x4 (who would provide the content anyway).

Anyway, its just an idea... If it doesn't fly, I hope there is room for another volunteer who will do almost anything, but has mucho communications experience should it be needed. I could set up a data network that would update, in real time, the times of all drivers through each checkpoint and display that on a monitor at race HQ. We've been doing this for years across a 100 mile race course (wrightwood to the rose bowl).

I'm also willing to wear a vest and and work the trenches as needed...

OOPS! I should have read the whole thread before responding! MT4 beat me to it!

You obviously have a ton of talent to share and I'm eager to learn!!! (and if we can do it while benefitting KOH.... :grinpimp:)

Wild Bill (BFG Relay / WB6BFG) was collecting all the checkpoint times, but got sidetracked with 4 different emergencies mid-race.

Edit: if we can't broadcast FM, we may have to try broadcasting medium-wattage (40-50w) VHF?...but that would be Pirate Radio, right.
