: th350 reverse manual VB questions
bbaxter51 02-15-2010, 02:16 PM 2 questions for the transmission guys on my TH350.
1. I've heard rumors of a reverse manual valve body being "hard" on the transmission and it will fail prematurely. To me this sounds like a old myth, but I know very little about automatic transmissions, so... Anyone else heard this or is there any truth to it?
2. If I were to go to a reverse manual vb, is there a preferred brand that people like? Art Carr or TCI? I've read about the AC and they have Compression braking in 1st and 2nd and seem to have different models for off road vs drag for the same reverse mvb, where the TCI description is pretty vague and only offer one option.
enigma2y0u 02-15-2010, 04:54 PM I know only what I have read about randomly, but I believe that depending on how hard it shifts you may beat it up a bit. The goal is for it to shift hard enough to not hurt the clutches andd soft enough to not hurt the rest of the drive train.
trkklr77 02-15-2010, 04:59 PM if you are hard core enough to run a reverse mvb you are probably exceeding the trannies limits in the first place.
and you dont run a rmvb to be nice to it or make it nice driving around to grandmas church.
bbaxter51 02-15-2010, 06:41 PM I see your point.
How about brands? Anyone better than another?
any one brand better than the other? Cheapest place to buy?
timothyalderson 02-15-2010, 08:37 PM I got the TCI one i think from Summit?? I know I had to put a better cooler on it and upgrade the roller sprag. I busted it pretty good. But I like being able to start in 2nd or Drive from stop.
timothyalderson 02-15-2010, 08:40 PM Oh one more thing. It does shift very very hard. It makes me nervous to shift on concrete after breaking the sprag.
Rockybar 02-16-2010, 09:18 PM Does anybody know about compression braking, I have heard that you cant get compression braking in a manual reverse vb in some transmissions.
trkklr77 02-16-2010, 09:26 PM yeah, they are designed to only be in the gear you selected reguardless of rpm or wheel speed.
timothyalderson 02-16-2010, 10:00 PM Umm I think some of them have the option. I think the TCI one i got had 1st and 2nd engine braking. Part # TCI-321001 from summit. Thats the only one I'm familier with. I know theres no braking in 3rd its almost like it free wheels and dosent put all the PSi to it, its hard to explain? Hope it helps?
bbaxter51 03-25-2010, 08:17 PM I'm bumping this back up. I got my ArtCarr RMVB, read the instructions and dropped the pan. Re-read the instructions, but this time I'm seeing a part I apparently skipped over. It says I need to pull the tranny apart to install 5 friction clutches in the reverse clutch pack.
I guess I was under the impression that it was a fairly straight forward VB swap I could do with the transmission still in the rig. Are they telling me to install new a new clutch pack because that's what's recommended? Or can I skip to page 2 where I install the modulator plug and valve body? My clutches have only a few runs on them and it shiftes strong.
beefdawg 03-25-2010, 09:26 PM Have you called customer service at art carr?
77bawls 03-25-2010, 09:48 PM Why would you run a reverse manual valve body in anything but a drag racer?

Is this a serious question?
1. I can hit reverse from 1st in a fraction of a second if I need to.
2. Compression breaking
3. all the benefits of a standard, without the clutch.
4. Because I like them in my off road rig.
trkklr77 03-26-2010, 07:55 AM 1. I can hit reverse from 1st in a fraction of a second if I need to.
auto trannies love it when you do that
2. Compression breaking meh,
3. all the benefits of a standard, without the clutch.because you are a pussy
4. Because I like them in my off road rig meh, pussys like them

You know, I have grown to enjoy your comments over the years.:flipoff2:
The guy asked why I would run one, I told him. As far as running a manual offroad, I know lots of guys like them, I think they completely blow. If i'm driving a sports car, then yes. Offroad, in the rocks, hell no.
And if your getting ready to go over backwards, yeah, I'd like to hit reverse that fast.
msalaba 03-26-2010, 09:48 AM I prefer the FORWARD manual valve body on my rig. You don't have to eat your teeth on the hood when going from 2 or 3 to N or R.
With a RMVB you almost need to be stopped to bring it up from 2 or 3.
My $0.02

Just got off the phone with the fine folks at ArtCarr and it turns out to be a pretty easy swap. No need to pull the trans out of the rig, just pull the old VB, ditch all the check balls and install the new one. Easy enough.

sa-weet, I love it when a plan comes together.
Keep us updated when you get it back together.
yota8485 03-26-2010, 07:22 PM might be a dumb question but i'm assuming that with a full manual valvebody, you don't have or need, for that matter, a kickdown cable, correct?
