392 is ALIVE!!!

Got the 392 back together and running Saturday. Spent almost as much time getting the ProJection set right as we did putting the motor in and hooking it up. It idles smoothly at 700rpm with a noticable lope, pulls hard to 5000rpm (think the points are floating) and is way stronger than my 345 was with the 260 comp cam. Here is what I did.

Extensive exhaust porting
262/270 0.494"/.501" Comp extreme energy cam
Comp lifters springs locks timing gears
Milled Deck .030", Heads .030"
9:1 compression ratio
2 barrel intake opened up for 2brl Projection
Standard bore, standard brgs, rblt oil pump
Balanced rods and pistons


Unfortunately I am still running exhaust manifolds and not headers <IMG SRC="smilies/devil.gif" border="0"> because I have no room to run a exhaust pipe down the passenger side frame rail.

Wish that I would have taken an additional .030" off of the heads to put me at 9.5:1

If it is the points, try a Pertronix drop-in replacement. Both my 304 and 345 pull hard to about 5500rpm when they run out of carb.. (both currently 2bbls)

Are you sure that's 9:1? I haven't run the math lately, but it seems to me that you didn't take off enough to be 9:1.

You milled .060, but you "lose" .020 of that thanks to the composite head gaskets (or did you find some NOS steel shims?) so you really only cut .040.

I know the math on a 345 vs. 392 is a little different, but taking .050 (net .030) off on my 345 should've only put it in the 8.5 to 8.7:1 range IIRC.


Or did you have the crank offset ground for more compression and stroke..?

In any case, it'll still pull trees out of the ground. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Sounds like a pretty sweet motor. I'd like to have a mototr like that one of these days when my Scout grows up <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> If you ever get the thing dynoed or take it to a strip, I'd like to see some numbers. I'm just curious how much power thes can build.
